| My name is Martha JoAn Snovel Helms. My mother,Martha Baker Horton, wrote a book about my ancestors and I published it. As I researched some areas Mom wrote about, I realized I had just begun my journey. My husband soon followed by researching the Helms' line. We are researching HELMS (GA), SNOVEL(PA), CARL(OK,MO), DEESE(FLA), DR. William MORRIS(NE & MO), BAKER-BYTH-MCNEIL(MO), DePreist(MO),MOON(GA), LANDON(MO), SHAW(MO). The most rewarding and hardest information to find has been on our Native American ancestors. One of my greatest thrills was seeing my grandfather's given Indian name as CELOLA on a 1900 Census. Grandpa, known as W.R. Dick Baker, never knew his true identity, birthdate, or birth place. There it was on that Census form. My husband's great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth MOON, also Native American, has been difficult to track. We have found certain similarities in finding each of them: both listed as White, neither listed on an Indian roll and there's no doubt, "word-down", they were Native American. |
