Descendants of William Bates of Culpeper/Madison Counties, Va. (1735-1794)

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 BATES1,2,3 was born 1735 in County of Culpeper, Virginia, and died 1794 in Madison Co., Virginia. He married (1) JANE DOE. He married (2) MARY HARRIS December 03, 1781 in Culpeper County, Virginia.

Notes for W
ILLIAM BATES:
William Bates and his son, William Bates, Jr., are listed in the Culpeper "Classes" (militia Training) No. 92. The elder Willliam Bates was granted a certificate for Aid and Assistance to the Troops during the War of the Revolution. This qualifies all of his decendants to be eligible to join the Daughters of the American Revolution. After the war, William and his son were in Culpeper County, Virginia.

William Sr married Mary Harris on Dec. 3, 1781 and resided in Culpeper County in the same area which later in 1793 became a part of Madison County, Area Tax Records list land taxes in his name by 1787 for 150 acres.

It was the opinion of the writer of the "Bates Family of Culpeper and Madison Co., Virginia" Thomas Wilson Chapman that Mary and Elizabeth Harris were widowed mother and daughter. William Jr married Elizabeth Harris.

In 1793 the portion of Culpeper County in which William Sr and his wife resided became a portion of the County of Madison. His will was written April 9, 1794, two months before his death. His will was proven after his death on June 26, 1794 Madison County Va., WB:1 page 47.

Land tax records later show the land in the names of some of his older sons.

*******

N.B. Ed F. Bates in his 1911 book "Tradition and History of the Bates Family of Virginia" stated that based upon tradition, locality and name patterns William Bates of Culpeper/Madison Counties was the brother of Reuben Bates of Stafford/King George/Fauquier/Louisa Counties Virginia. Both used similar naming patterns for their sons. Both had sons named Reuben, James, William and Willis. We continue our search for the evidence to prove this assumption.
