PREFACE
Over many years I
have collected quite a deal of information, family trees, newspaper cuttings and
references relating to the Henzell family in Australia and in England. It has
been difficult to get a cohesive picture from all these documents. I thought
that I would attempt to draw these threads together to give a picture of the
Henzell family from the first references in the Lorraine to their settlement in
Australia. I have done this for myself primarily, and also for anyone else who
may be interested.
This study is
centred on the migration of four Henzell brothers to Queensland in 1862 and
1866. These brothers came to Brisbane in the early days of the Moreton Bay
settlement soon after the end of transportation. Labour was a scarce commodity
at the time and Queensland had just been granted separation from New South
Wales. Queensland had appointed an agent in London to recruit immigrants.
Cotton growing was promising to be the new growth industry, and Queensland
needed farmers. The promise of a new start, and the prospect of obtaining land
for farming must have persuaded the Henzell brothers to leave their home and
become pioneers in this promising land.
While every care
has been taken to make sure the facts stated here are correct I realize that
there are many gaps and omissions. I have not had the time to do all the
research necessary to fill these deficiencies. Should anyone reading these
pages find errors or be able to fill gaps or expand the story I would be only
too pleased to have the information and make the changes.
I feel that it is
important to record as much family history as possible at this time. Much
information is in people’s minds and has not been committed to paper. Young
Henzell's are not necessarily interested now but some may be in years to come.
So that this does
not appear to be a dull listing of names and dates I have tried to put some of
the important events in the context of the time. This is not meant to be a
history book but events and some relevant history helps to explain why the
Henzell's migrated first from Bohemia to France, England and finally Australia.
I hope that this
is interesting to some of the Henzell family, present and future.
