ENGLISH HISTORY
THE FAMILY OF JOHN
HARROP & ANNE HENZELL
CHILDREN OF JOHN
HARROP & ANNE HENZELL
OTHER HENZELL
FAMILIES IN AUSTRALIA
As with the
migration of the Henzells to England, there are at least three, perhaps four
different families of Henzells in Australia. It appears that they all
originated from England.
The purpose of
this chapter is to trace the "roots" of the descendants of Thomas
Smith, John Harrop and Frederick Lumley Henzell. Thomas Smith, John Harrop,
together with their elder brother William Lumley, emigrated to Australia from
Manchester in 1862. They are listed as passengers on the
"Montmorency" which sailed from Plymouth on 6th January, 1862,
arriving in Brisbane ninety‑one days later on 7th April, 1862.
Passengers in the
1862 voyage of the
"Montmorency" included 195 in intermediate and steerage class of
whom:‑
‑ 78 were
paid for by the Colonial Government,
‑ 30 were
remittance immigrants, and
‑ 77 came
out under special arrangements with J. Bains & Co.
The three Henzell
brothers were listed as "farmers". William was also described as
"Acting Assistant Surgeon". He was described as a Chemist on his
death certificate, presumably following in his father’s footsteps.
Frederick Lumley
Henzell, a younger brother, arrived in Brisbane from Manchester by the ship
"Great Victoria", in 1866, joining his two brothers already settled
here.
Unfortunately William Lumley accidentally drowned near Barnett Swamp, South
Brisbane on 31st January, 1863.
Very little is
set down about the family they left behind. It is only after piecing together
various snippets of information, and searching the International Genealogical
Index (IGI) compiled by the Mormon Church, that a picture of the English
ancestry can be made. Some of the facts detailed below have been verified from
source documents, such as birth certificates. Other connections have been
deduced from common names, particularly the name Harrop, which has been used as
a family name to this day. The Harrop family had made or cut glass here for many
generations. It is interesting to find the name mentioned in the IGI in three
places:‑
John Henzell
married Margaret Harup at South Shields on 2nd February, 1734.
John Hareup
Henzell, a grandson of John and Margaret was christened at South Shields on 23rd, February 1774.
John Harrop
Henzell, son of John Hareup, and father of William Lumley, Thomas Smith, John
Harrop and Frederick Lumley, was born at Boldon, near South Shields in 1812.
The name Harrop
has been perpetuated in Australia by John Harrop, son of Thomas Smith Henzell,
Keith Harrop Henzell, grandson of Thomas's brother John Harrop, Keith's son
Ross Harrop, and his daughters, Patricia Harrop Rigby and Christine Harrop
Johansen.
Using the names
John and Harrop in its various forms the following family tree shows a probable
line of descendants commencing from the marriage of John Henzell and Margaret
Harup in 1734. The details have mostly been extracted from the IGI list dated
January 1988 for the County of Durham.

Could it be that
John and Isabella married sister and brother, Ann and Thomas Smith? John Harrop
and Ann seem to have named their third child after Thomas Smith.
A detailed family
tree on the Henzell families has been compiled from the parish registers of All
Saints and St.Nicholas, Newcastle. So far it has not been possible to connect
the two families directly but, as they lived only a few miles apart, it is
unlikely that they are not related.
Information about
John Harrop Henzell is fairly scarce but some insight into his life can be
gleaned from various references. He has been variously describes as
"Surveyor of Taxes" (in the Inland Revenue Department, Civil
Service, England), "Druggist", "Chemist" and in one reference a
"Surgeon to the army in the south of England". The most useful information was
obtained from the 1861 Census records. The Census lists the residents of 9
Great Portwood Street, Stockport, which is just outside Manchester, and is
shown below:
1.John Harrop
Henzell, aged 49, Surveyor of Taxes, born Boldon, Durham.
2.Ann Henzell,
aged 49, born Stockton‑on‑Tees, Durham.
3.Maria,
daughter, unmarried, aged 23, born Stockton.
4.Thomas S, son,
born Stockton, aged 20.
5.John Harrop
Junior, son, aged 18, born Braintree, Essex.
6.Charles, son.
aged 17, born Braintree, Essex.
7.Fred L, son,
aged 16, born Chichester (Sussex).
8.Ann, daughter,
aged 14, born Chichester (Sussex).
9.Edward Twizer,
son, aged 12, born Bexhill, Sussex.
10.Septimus, son,
aged 9, born Stockport, Cheshire.
The only child
not mentioned is the eldest, William, who would have been 26 at the time and
was presumably living elsewhere.
From the census
it can be seen that the family was constantly on the move in connection with
his work as Surveyor of Taxes.
The 1876 Street
Directory of Manchester has the
following entries which are interesting and reveal the occupations and
businesses of the family:
Henzell &
Co., Beer Retailers and Brewers, Clarendon Brewery.
Henzell, John H.,
Brewer, S. D. Henzell & Co.
Henzell, Septimus
Decimus, Brewer, S. D. Henzell & Co. 56 Plymouth Grove, Chorlton‑on‑Medlock,
Manchester.
H. S. D. &
Co., Clarendon Brewery, Angle & Clarendon Street, Chorlton‑on‑Medlock, Manchester.

The emigration of
the Henzell brothers and their settlement in Brisbane will be discussed in more
detail in a later chapter.
Clara Balfour
& Hannah Mary Trundle were sisters and Fanny Maria Robinson was the
daughter of their older sister Fanny Elizabeth.
There are two
other families of Henzells to my knowledge in Australia. One settled in
Brisbane and the other based in Adelaide. There are Henzells listed in the
Melbourne and Perth telephone directories, but I think that they are related to
the Queensland or Adelaide branches.
Mr. Paul Henzell,
his wife and two children arrived in Brisbane about 1980. Paul was employed as
commissioning engineer at the Tarong Power station near Kingaroy, and lived in
Brisbane. Paul is directly descended from the Henzells recorded on the Newcastle
family tree. A brief family tree is shown below:

Henzell is described in the family tree as follows:
Born 1826; died
20 October, 1891; married at the Brunswick Place Chapel on 23rd April, 1850 to
Jane Stephenson of Ponteland, William being described as bachelor, aged 24 of
West Clayton Street, son of John Beanland Henzell, master mariner. In 1849
William opened a grocery business which he carried on successfully till his
death. He also founded Liddle, Henzell & Co., glassmanuctory. He was originator
of the Newcastle Hospital for Incurables and chairman of the hospital for
diseases of the chest. He was a member of the Town Council and Board of
Guardians, a member of the Free Library Committee and governor of the Grammar
School.
In tracking the
Henzells listed in the Adelaide telephone directory I contacted Mr. Harold
Henzell. As a result I received the following reply which is recorded below:
2/72 Wattle St
Fullarton 5063
16/10/87.
Dear Barry,
Thank you for
your letter re the Henzell family. My daughter Diana is going to send you
photostats of what we know of the family so I will try to be brief as possible.
My father was a
Marine Engineer born in Newcastle‑on‑Tyne and my mother Nellie
Rhonda South born in Durham. He left the sea to become Chief Engineer at
Geelong Woolen Mills together with their three children Josephine, Robert
Charles and Eva. Later he and the family went to Pt. Pirie to take up the
position of C. E. Smelters.
He joined the S.
A. Harbours Board as Senior C. E. from
Pt. Pirie and I was born on 31/8/1915 after Eva died from typhoid. My sister
Josephine (Joy) was 14 years older and my brother Robert (Roy) was 12 years
older than me. Eva died, I think, when she was 7 years of age. Joy died 23
years ago and Roy 4 years ago. I married Jane Baxter Stewart in 1944 whilst in
the Navy. Our only child Diana was born in Canberra in 1945 when we were at
Belconnan Navy Wireless Station. My wife died two years ago last August and I
am now battling along alone in a unit at the age of 72, but playing bowls and
snooker also fishing to fill in time.
My father never talked about his family or relations. All I knew at the time of growing up was that his father was a glassmaker. Roy And I meet at Richmond Airdrome in 1937, he was in the R.A.A.F., I in the Navy Fleet Air Arm. He contacted a member of the Henzell family in Sydney who were agents for Caterpillar Tractors and the son came out to Richmand whom I meet briefly, can't remember his christen name.
In 1977 my wife,
Diana & I visited the Royal Brierly Crystal factory, and as we were
Henzells we were shown over the historical room containing original Henzell
glass making & the Bill of Sale from the Henzells to the present owners.
Incidentally I
have a color photograph of the original Coat of Arms belonging to our French
ancestors given to me by Ina Henzell who died some years ago. I met them
through the Warringtons (nee Henzell).
Through them I
met Dr. Lindley Henzell from W. A. who set up the Perth University for 5th year
medical students to get their degree, previously having to come to Adelaide to
complete.
I'm afraid our
side of the family has not contributed to the Henzell name. My brother Roy was
married three times, produced two daughters, myself one. No sons, so perhaps
your family can keep the family name alive. One more thing, there is a book
called "Broad Glass to Crystal" written as a thesis by a student
which outlines the Henzell history, you may have to go to the library archives
to obtain it.
Regards, Harold.
Mrs. Diana O'Neil
(nee Henzell) has provided the following family tree tracing their side of the

I have just started
researching my family history and it is very difficult because I don't have
contact with any family. I was wondering if I had a connection to your
family
I was born in 1941 during the war in Britain. My father was Roy Charles Henzell who was in the Australian Air Force and was from South Australia. (one of the Adelaide suburbs I believe). I remember being told that he was a pilot.
I did not meet my father until I was 4 yrs old. He married my mother; Star Frances Darling in Britain and had to leave before I was born. My mother & I came to Australia when the war ended to be with my father who was stationed in Queensland at the time.
The marriage only lasted a short time, and I did not see my father again.
I lost contact with my mother years ago, so cannot get any information from that source.
My granddaughters are very interested to learn about their family on my side as it is fairly blank to date.
I believe my father was still living in South Australia about 1964/5 and was re-married. I also believe that he had other children.
I would appreciate any information you could give me.
Many thanks,
June Box
