The Brethren Encyclopedia The Brethren Press, Elgin, IL (1983) pp. 217-7 ------------------------------------- John Brubaker (Prupecker), possibly born in Switzerland, was married in 1774 to Anna Myers, daughter of Jacob and Anna Burkholder Meyer of Lancaster Co. John and Anna bought land in Franklin Co., VA in 1789, and in 1804 bought 150 acres in Botetourt (now Roanoke) Co. from Jacob and Magdalena Eller. They added more land in later years; parts of these holdings are still (1980) in the Brubaker family, including the old Brubaker cemetery. After moving from Pennsylvania to Virginia, this family became Brethren. Their farm was the setting of the 1839 Annual Meeting and the 1895 Annual Meeting of the Old German Baptist Brethren. John and Anna Meyers Brubaker were the parents of Henry, John, Jacob, Abraham, Anna Eller, Barbara Overholser, Christina Peters, and Catherine Eller.
Many descendants were prominent in early pioneer Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Kansas, and California. Through the years many have been active in the different branches of the Brethren churches. Pennsylvania still claims many descendants of the Brubakers, and many descendants of John and Anna Brubaker. LHB

The Brubakers of Roanoke County, VA have in their possession a paper written in German script which contains name and birth dates of the Children of John Brubaker and wife, Anna Myers. This John Brubaker bought 150 acres of land from Jacob Eller and wife Magdalena, in the year 1804, which at the time was located in Boutetourt Co., but since the erection of Roanoke Co. in 1838 the land lies in that county. The location is about 4 miles northwest of the city limits of Roanoke and 4 miles northwest of Salem. (not sure is this can be "northwest" of both Roanoke and Salem, info. from WFT vol. 1)
From all available information, John Brubaker and wife were from Cocalico region of Lancaster County, PA. There is a marriage record that John and Anna of Cocalico were married May 1, 1774. In 1800, Jacob Beyer of Bethel Township, Dauphin Co., now Lebanon Co. made a will in which he mentions a daughter Anna married to John Brubaker. From 1777 to 1782, his name appears on several civil records of Bethel Township.

John BRUBAKER ------------- Note: It is apparrent that he came to America from Germany either as a boy with his parents or as a young man by himself. He cannot be located in the above-mentioned ship passenger lists (1727-1775); therefore, he probably came while still a boy under 16 years of age with his father. Since his father's name is unknown, John cannot be identified by these lists either. We do not know when he was born, but it had to have been around 1750. We have 1880 census information indicating that he was born in Germany. Resided in Botetourt County, VA, now part of Roanoke County, about 1804. According to Sandra Kay Kimble was buried in Brubaker Cemetery, Salem, VA
Birth: ABT 1750 in Germany
Note: The birth of John Brubaker I was estimated in accordence of the date of his marriage to Anna Myers, and with the birth of his oldest son, Henry. Actual date of birth is unknown. According to a 1880 Census, John Brubaker I was born in Germany, and is possibly the grandnephew of Immigrant Hans Brubaker, who is the first to arrive in 1709. Nothing is yet proven. There is a rumor that he was born on January 1, 1750 in Germany; but I am sure that is more speculation than fact. 1

Marwin E. Brubaker has that John Brubaker was born about 1750 in Germany; Esther Kemp has that he was born 1750 in Cocalico twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The names, birth years, and spouses of all of John & Anna's children except for Abraham (whom she does not list) are from Esther Kemp. The data on Abraham is from Marwin Brubaker. More detailed dates are from Lowell Beachler, but he does not list Peter or Benjamin, which Esther and Marwin both do. Either Esther Kemp's approximate birth years for Peter and Benjamin are off by a year, or these children are twins of the children known to be born in those years, or they are not really children of John and Anna at all. http://tpettit.best.vwh.net/family/grisso/FG01/FG01_317.htm
