Notes for Edmund Hartford:
At the age of 16 years Edwin ran away from home and followed the sea forsome time, becoming p art
owner of a vessel. At the beginning of the present century (1800) hecame to Wayne County,
Pennsylvania, and located on the west branch of Paupack Creek, in SalemTownship, where he mad e his
home until his death. During the war of 1812 he assisted in building afort. He died in 187 2 at the
extreme old age of 96 years.

Edmond Hartford, 96,Salem Township, Wayne County, died 1872. He was born 1776 and came to Salem in 1814. His wife was the former Susanna hazelton (1797-1852). They were the parents of: (1) Edmond Jr., who died at age 18 1/2; (2) Thomas, born March 22, 1830, died March 11, 1904, married on August 22, 1853 to Frances J., born March 4, 1830, died October 8, 1900, daughter of Richard and Hannah (Smith) Simons of Sterling; (3) Susanna, who died at age 15.

Edmond Hartford was the father of two daughters by a former marriage, Jerusha, and Joanna, wife of William Widerman.

Richard Simons was born in County Tyrone and brought to America whenabout 5 years old by hi s parents who settled in Philadelphia. He learnedthe nail-making trade. He married Miss Hannah Smith who was born inPhila, PA and had german ancestry. Moved to Pike County about 181 6 and purchased land for a mere nothing, the cost of clearing few acres was$700 - land was sto ny and covered with heavy growth of timber. He livedthere about 7 years before moving to Ste rling Twp (about 1823). He bough100 acres of woodland, clearing nearly all of it. He remain ed thereuntil his death at age 70 - about 1860.

History of Wayne County

Came to Philadelphia from Tyrone, Ireland, in 1806, and to Greenetownship about 1807 or 1808 , where he bought 200 acres of land, partlypaid for it and gave a mortgage for the balance . He returned toPhiladelphia, and worked at nail-making
