Decree, 22 October 1849, issued by the Washington County, Virginia, court in chancery in the case of Moses (1782-1856) and Tabitha Cawood (1790-1852) (Cawood) vs. Sally (Sarah) Hurst (1795-ca. 1850) and others ordering the auction of the slaves of the estate of Edward McNew (1755-1827). McNew's slaves had been left to his wife Nancy (1771-1849) during her lifetime, and after her death, McNew's heirs petitioned the court for the slaves' sale. The court ordered that the slaves be sold at public auction at the courthouse in six months' time.--Moses Cawood. Decree, 22 October 1849. Accession 38408. Personal papers collection. Biog./Hist. NoteBorn 6 April 1782, Moses Cawood (Carwood) was a farmer in Washington County, Virginia. He married Tabitha McNew (1790-1852), daughter of Edward McNew (1755-1827) and Nancy McNew (1771-1849) 29 January 1807, and they had 7 children. Moses Cawood died 3 July 1856.
