I am attempting to trace my family history through both, my father's and mother's sides. The second spelling in the title of this home page, CHECINSKI, is the original spelling of the family name. In the original, there is a diacritical mark under the "e".
My father, Konstanty August CHECINSKI, was born in Poland, June 13, 1892, and emigrated to the U.S. in May of 1912. The spelling was changed, either voluntarily, or through the auspices of an authoritarian Immigration official, to look and sound like what it sounded as in the Polish pronounciation; ergo: HENCINSKI.
Konstanty had an older brother, John and and older sister, Joanna among his ten siblings. John CHECINSKI (1879-1945) and Joanna CHECINSKI (1887-1970) preceded Konstanty to the U.S. John settled in New Jersey where he married Mary MITKA (1885-1967). They had four children: Genevieve (b. 1905), Sigmund (1907-1976), Stephanie (b. 1915), and Walter (b. 1919). Joanna CHECINSKI settled first in the Philadelphia, PA / Camden, NJ area, then Milwaukee, WI, then Chicago, IL. She married Roman RUCINSKI and had four children: Walter Carl [1905-1992 (who changed his name to Ross)]; Jean (1907-1976); Wanda (b. 1912); and Roman John (b. 1915). Joanna (Jennie) and Roman were divorced and she married John DEMBIK (1890-1971). There were no children born of that union.
Konstanty married my mother, Helen (born Helene Margarethe) SCHWAK (1901-1980) on May 3, 1921 in Chicago, IL. There were three children: Martha (b. 1922), Leon Konstanty (b. 1924), and me, Edward J., (b. 1930). Helen was born in Camden, NJ.
Helen's parents were Carl (or Karl) SCHWAK (1870-1904) and Augusta SCHWAK (1872-1958 nee PAPKE). Augusta was born in Frankfurt am der Oder, Germany, one of at least two children born to Otto PAPKE and Gottliebe PAPKE (nee PELKE). [Gottliebe was the daughter of William (or Wilhelm) PELKE and Wilhelmina PELKE, of whom I know nothing, not even Wilhelmina's maiden name.] Augusta emigrated to the U.S. in 1889, settling down in Camden, New Jersey, where she married Carl in 1896. Once in the U.S., Augusta worked for two years and saved enough money to bring her mother and sister, Juliana, to America. There were three children of the union between Carl and Augusta: Edward (1898-? who died in infancy or at an extremely early age); Helen, my mother; and Charles (1903-c.1919).
After Carl's death in 1904, Augusta married Peter RUCINSKI and there were three children of that union, (my mother's half-brothers and half-sister): Benny (1908-1977), Wanda (1912-1993), and Felix Peter (1910-1949), called "Phil". Interestingly, Peter RUCINSKI was the brother of Roman RUCINSKI named above. (And yes, each family had a daughter, Wanda, born 11 months apart.)
If anyone has any knowledge of any of the families named herein, I would very much appreciate being made aware of any information you have.
