*II. Sutherd did not identify the wife of Richard Gaines in his research; however, there are researchers who claim that hewas married twice - first to Dorothy Kelley and then to Catherine Madison (born 1693 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia; died about 1760 in Culpeper County, Virginia). Some others think he was married only once and this was to Catherine (surname unknown); yet others contend that his wife was named Catherine Rawlins/Rawlings.
While I certainly don't pretend to be a genealogy expert, in looking at the dates of birth of his children the indications are that he was, in fact, married twice. In the 1700s, it is highly unlikely that there would have been a 10-year gap between the births of children as there is in the case ofRoger born 1714 and John born 1724, unless a wife died and the man remarried and started another family. For that reason I am showing him with two unknown wives. It is possible, of course, that there were children who were born and diedduring this span of time.
From "A Compilation of Gaines Family Data With Special Emphasis On The Lineage of William and Isabella Pendleton Gaines," CalvinE. Sutherd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, June 1969:
In the settlement of the estate (only an inventory) of Richard Gaines, Culpeper County, Virginia, Will BookA, page 133-134; July 16, 1756, Francis Gaines was named administrator by the court and in his report to the court he mentioned his expense "in moving mother." Thus, it is very evident that Francis Gaines, the administrator of the estate was the son of Richard.
