6. William² Copeland (John¹) was born 1650 in Isle of Wight, Virginia (Source: James E. Bell has 1650, IGI has1647. 1681 St. Francois Rd. TDL Bonne Terre, MO 63628), and died Aft. October 23, 1720 in Chowan County, North Carolina. He married Christian [Copeland] 1678 in Isle of Wight, Virginia (Source: IGI.).

Notes for William Copeland:
Some confusion with this line. In Copeland Cuzzins, V1,#4 J. Ilene Barber, PO Box 891, Copperas Cove, TX 76522 lists this person and descendants with three generations of William Copelands. This differs from other genealogies. Sources not clear.

Will filed in Chowan County, NC on 10/23/1720

Will filed in Chatham County, NC dated 7/21/1724 has William Copeland with wife Christian and children William, Jr., John, James, Charley, Sarah and Christian. This obviously fits this family. More primary research indicated. Grace apparently is listed in some early books and not in others.

Many secondary sources lists Christian Taberer as wife of William Copeland son of John Copeland. Primary sources unclear, however Quaker records pretty clearly show that Christian Taberer, dtr. of Thomas, married William Oudlant (spelled variously). Wills mention above refer to William Copeland who some believe to be descended from Middlesex County, VA Copelands, originally from Scotland and different from Isle of Wight Copelands believe descended from John Copeland of England. Assuming two William Copelands with wives named Christian and same children's names seems to beg incredulity. Good likelihood that these two Williams (if two even exist) are confused.
