Notes for Urania Mahala McIntire:
Urania was born in Harper County, Kansas near Chesterfield on July 29, 1982 to Dallas H. and Lydia Amira Perkins McIntire.
At the opening of the Cherokee Strip, her father made the race, but didn't get a farm.On December 3, 1893 he filed on a farm two miles south and one mile west of Cherokee, Oklahoma.On April 19, 1894 they came to the farm in a covered wagon to a 12 foot by 15 foot sod dugout, which was later replaced by a frame house.Rena (as she was known to her friends) was at home here until 1912.
On July 9, 1911, William Francis Carter and brother Charlie were on the road home from harvest in Kansas.They camped at the McIntire cottonwood grove for the night.During the night, one of the horses rolled into the barbed wire and cut his foot.Francis came to the house for help.The McIntires went out to the camp to help.While doctoring the horse, Dallas McIntire and Francis learned that they were Brother Oddfellows.Dallas took Francis to town so he could go to his home west of Canton to get another horse.One July 30, he came back to see about his horse.The last part of August 1911 he brought his mother and little niece to get the horse.
Rena and Francis then started corresponding.Rena found that Francis had friends in Cherokee, so she asked about him.They all said he had a good reputation.His best friend was the late John H. Bonto who ran a drug store.He was also Francis' school teacher.
On September 8, 1912, Francis and Rena were married at her parents home at a small quiet wedding.In December of 1913, they returned to Rena's home where their first child was born.A boy, Joseph Dallas Carter born on January 1, 1914.
In 1916 they moved to Cherokee where Francis had learned the mechanic trade.On December 10, 1919 Lydia Frances was born.Then on February 13, 1922 Bessie Odessie was born.
In 1928 they bought a car shop at Jet, Oklahoma and lived there until 1934 when they moved back to Cherokee.Cherokee has been their home since except for about two years when they lived in Wichita, Kansas and Francis worked at Boeing Airplane factory.
After moving back to their home in Cherokee, J.D. and Grace Edna Horton were married on August 1, 1936.
Lydia was married to Troy H. Powell in April 1939 and was later divorced.Lydia Eckler died on September 1, 1969.
Bessie married Van H. Powell on May 3, 1939 and lived in Wichita, Kansas when Van died in September 18, 1997.
Rena has six grandchildren, all married and eleven great grandchildren at the time of this writing in 1980.
