Notes for Amelia Jane Minor:
Well yesterday was one of those regular old windy Kansas days.A day twelve hours long in which the doors bang, windows rattle, the baby is cross and the cat scratches. You get your eyes full of sand and taste it in the soup.Your hat blows away, you're too hot with your coat fastened and chill when the collar is open.Every minute you're out the sand is graduating down your spine. You can hardly wait for night to come when you can shake out your shoes and rub the cold cream into a cheek that is gashed with sand pebbles. At last night calmly rests upon us but we find the day has been too much for some two weary hearts have ceased to beat.
As I walk along I find the awnings under my feet, the sand drifted in the street, signs are aslant, but there is a smile on the faces of those I meet for the sun rose pleasantly on the City of Syracuse this morn, but nevertheless yesterday seems an aching void.

OLD HOME
By Amelia Minor
Still stands the Old Home
By the wayside
Beneath the sky's blue dome.
There's the long road
To the river bridge
Just beyond is a cottonwood
On the valley ridge.
There are the same old
Sand dunes
Where we play in
The long ago June.
There are the same merry
Bird tunes
Unharnessed by radio
Waves.
The sun shines as bright
The winds blow as free
But things are not so gay
Since you all went away.
