OHN HENRY HERALD:
From Clinch Valley News, Tazewell County, Virginia, 3 Feb 1899 <HeraldVA-0051>:
"A DISTRESSING ACCIDENT

A Child Killed - Mother and Infant Badly Injured - Other News Notes.

THOMPSON VALLEY, JAN 31, 1899. -- On last Thursday, as John Harold was moving his brother's family, consisting of a wife and three small children, from Kelley to Thompson Valley, in a two horse wagon, the team became frightened when near the residence of T.M. Hawkins West of town, and started on a run. Mr. Dudley Harold and his brother John were both thrown out, leaving the wife and children in the wagon. One of the little boys was thrown out and had his arm broken in two places. The mother, hoping to save the baby jumped, and fell on a pile of stones, receiving fearful injuries.

The baby died from the effects of the fall. The other child remained in the wagon until the horses stopped and was not hurt."

Tazewell County Heritage, Vol I, Tazewell County, Virginia 1799-1995, Project of Tazewell County Historical Society (1995) <HeraldVA-0052>:

After his father, a Confederate soldier, had died of wounds suffered toward the end of the Civil War, John Herald married Hallie Jane Mulkey and continued to operate a farm in Thompson Valley, Tazewell County, Virginia. There, they raised their seven boys and five girls: John (Jr.), William, George, Oscar, Felix, Jesse, Robert, Osceola, Margie, Julie, Donia, and Nannie.
John Herald, Sr., died at home following a protracted illness in 1927. Fire destroyed the original farmhouse in 1935. A smaller house was built for Hallie Jane (born July 20, 1848) and she died at home in 1937. Both are buried in the family cemetery on the farm. John and Hallie Jane Herald's twelve children brought them sixty grandchildren.
Today, although a number of Herald grandchildren and great-grandchildren still live in the Tazewell County area, many more live throughout the United States.

Notes for J
AMES FLOYD HALL:
Elke Hall notes:
(Eleanor Cook describes "James Floyd (grandpappy) was a farm overseer, he usually stayed dressed up, wore a long white beard, when he died, it was completely white, down to his belt, and very silky. Mary Margaret had blue eyes, curly hair and very dark skin. In her early years she had a trap line and sold fur pelts. She wore men's shoes and smoked a pipe. She worked much harder than grandpappy.")
