THE HERBELIN FAMILY
John Baptiste Herbelin was born in the Alsace region of France. He entered the United States at Galveston, Texas in 1869. He came with two of his brothers, Eugene and Alfred all at the same time. They left eight sisters and two brothers in France. The parents names have been said to be Jean Baptiste Herbelin born about 1811 died La Chapelle sous Rougemont, France, and Marie Anna Courand born about 1817 died 25 Dec 1867 La Chapelle sous Rougemont, France. This I do not know to be correct or incorrect along with some of the names of the siblings thought to be left behind, Francis, Cecile, Josephine, Ernest.
John Baptiste became a US citizen on 5 Nov. 1888 in Waco, McLennan County TX where he raised his family.
Mary Jane Smith Herbelin is believed to have been born September 08, 1853 in either MS or Bastrop County TX. Her parents were Demcy C. Smith born December 26, 1834 in MS( his parents John E. Smith and Mary unk) and Evan M. Patric born May 03, 1835 in MS(her parents John Patric and Mary unk). Again I don't have proof of these statements. The names and information on the Smith family came from a family bible owned by Nettie Herbelin daughter of Mary Jane Smith. The children of John and Mary Smith are :
Mary Jane Smith married to John Baptiste Herbelin,
John C. Smith b. November 08, 1854,
William Pinckney Smith b. October 09, 1856,
Georgianna Smith b. May 19, 1858,
George Washington Smith b. May 19,1858 married to Texanna Bailey (they had a daughter named Nina Mae),
Henrietta Septer Smith b. February 03, 1861,
Valeria Jeanette Smith b. December 29, 1864,
James Harvey Smith b. December 02, 1869,
Brandon Winfield Smith b. December 02, 1869
Some of this information was compiled by Lucy Mae Smith and Wilna Sawyer, it was given to me my father-in-law. Other names related to the Herbelin families are: Willis, McMahan, Davis, Hall, Trammell, Lassetter, Smith, Sawyer, Fischer, Kelly, Drennon and many more. Many remained in Texas and there are many descendants still living in Texas today.
Another brother was supposed to have come to the US after the first three brothers. This brother did not come to Texas and we don't know where he settled and raised his family. I would love to connect with any of the Herbelin family members and any connected by marriage. I also would like to have corrections on any misinformation here because nothing here is guaranteed as correct.
THE TURNER AND ADAMS FAMILIES
The patriarch of the Turner family is John " The Elder" Turner born in 1775, it is said that he was born in Ireland. He was a Revolutionary War soldier serving for NC, John is buried in Dickson County, Tennessee. His son George and wife Susan Adams Turner were the parents of Richard Dillard Turner he married Sarah "Sallie" Finch, they were the parents of George Washington Turner. He married Fredonia or Ferdonia Thomas and they were the parents of James Harvel Dalton Turner.
In the early 1900's James "Harve" Harvel Dalton Turner moved to Limestone County Texas along with his Father-in-law Luther " Lon" A. Adams and Mother-in-law Mary Jane Turner Adams. "Harve" was one of the first businessmen in Armour, TX. In 1903 the town was renamed Coolidge. Some of the first merchants in this town were Harve Turner, dray and hauling along with L.A. "Lon" Adams, groceries. In June 1904 L.A. Adams was the first depositor in the new bank the First National Bank of Coolidge.
The parents of Benjamin Franklin Adams were John Adams born 1786 in Halifax, VA, and Margaret Turner born October 27, 1787 in NC. Margaret was the daughter of John "The Elder" Turner. The Turner and Adam families inter marry several times and this makes it confusing.
I would love to have any corrections, we all make mistakes, and any additions of people that are missing from my list. What I have listed would not have been possible without a lot of help from family and friends, Mary Lu, Aunt Mar
