January 1st 1860-Went to preaching in the sled. Came home. Ate my dinner, washed the dishes. It is an exceedingly cold day. Pa is better.
2nd-Helped milk, made a shade for my eye. Helped wash. John Mc Smyth came up here in the afternoon. We all went to John Hayes. Singing at Cedar Run at night. J. M. Kryder brought Cyrus up to school. He stopped here for supper. Mary went down with him to singing at Cedar Run. The rest of us went in the sled. We had a very pleasant time and enjoyed our ride very much.
January 3rd 1860-Maggie Miliken is fixing my silk dress. Mr. and Mrs. Robison [are] here for dinner. Mary and I got the dinner. We had 10 callers. John Smyth took Maggie M. home.
4th-Helped milk, fed the calf, helped iron. Mary went down to Uncle David Smyth's. Elanor and John McClenahan are up. They and Will Smyth came home with her. In the afternoon, Mary went with them to Aunt Becca's. I milked and got ready for singing. John and I went up in the sleigh; we had a great crowd at singing.
January 5th, 1860-Helped catch chickens and get dinner. Washed the dishes, knitted and sewed. In the eve, we went to prayer meeting at the Seminary.
6th-Helped milk, done numerous things, knitted some. Mary and John went to Beck's Store. Uncle D. Smyth and John McClenahan spent the eve here.
7th-John Beck called. I churned. John McClenahan here in the forenoon. It rained most all day. Mary and I went down to Uncle David's and spent the afternoon. The snow is going very fast. We milked after dark.
8th-Sabbath. Went to preaching, the snow is melting very rapidly.
January 9th 1860-Helped wash. John took some oats to N and J Beck. This is a beautiful day.
10th-Churned and helped to iron. After dinner Pa took a ride down to Uncle David's. Uncle James, Aunt Betsy and Jane Beck, Ell McClenahan and John here spending the afternoon. John Smyth and Will, John Beck and Jim spent the eve with us.
11th-Was just going out to milk when John met me and said one of our cows (Daisy) was dead. Helped milk, made a bed. Jane and Ell left for Uncle Smyth's. I went out with the boys. They opened the cow, went to singing in the eve. This is the last night of Burlues quarter.
January 12th 1860-Helped milk, knit the heel of my stocking, washed the dinner dishes. We had quite a snow last night, was 4 or 5 inches deep. John went to prayer meeting, John B, came home alone.
13th-Churned. We have threshers today. Uncle D Smyth called. Mary went down there. Mr. Wolf and Mr. J. M. Kryder spent the evening with us.
14th-Helped do up the morning work and finished my stocking. Mag Beck and Jim brought Sarah Sterett here; she staid all night. We have a fresh cow (Jinnie).
15th-We went to church both morning and evening and heard two very good sermons.
January 16th 1860-Churned, dressed the butter. Helped wash. Pa and Ma started for Clintonville, got as far as Snydertown but the sleighing was so poor that they came back. Mother and Rosan Sterret went to Mr. McDowle's. Jane R. Mc. and Beckie Laurie here all night.
17th-Jane and Beckie started to school. I scoured the knives and forks and commenced a mitten for myself. Helped wash the dinner dishes. Mother and Aunt Rosan went down to Uncle David's. Pa went to Beck's Store.
January 18th-I churned. Papa and Mother took Rosan up to Uncle James. D. G. McCalmont from Iowa called. Uncle and Aunt Millikin were here. We went to singing, came home with Mr. Fransue.
19th-Pa, Ma, and Mary went to Clintonville. John and I kept house. There were three peddlars here. Mary and John went to prayer meeting.
20th-Mary swept, Mother baked, I done numerous things. We went to a party at Uncle James' and took the Seminary Ladies and Gents. There was 15 of us in one wagon. We had a very pleasant time.
January 21st 1860-Churned, dressed the butter. John Smyth called. Will Watson called in the afternoon.
22nd-We have no preaching. Spent the day at home. This is a very warm day. The roads are very muddy.
23rd-Churned, helped wash, knit at my mittens. Helped learn a calf to drink.
24th-Mary Ironed. I was busy most all day at my mittens, finished and washed them. John and Mary down at Uncle David's. Well, bedtime.
25th-Helped milk. Churned, went down to Uncle David's. Went to singing in the eve. We had a very large turnout. I came home with Mr. Marshall Everhart.
January 26th-I went with John to Beck's store. Got some fringe for my silk dress. Got some cloth for my quilt. Mary went to Clintonville in the afternoon with John Smyth.
27th-I churned. Mary swept. I knit some numerous other turns. There is a snow, 3 or 4 inches deep on the ground.
28th-I helped milk, churned. Helped get dinner. Old Mr. Saks, from whom I got a set of jewelry, called. I paid him off. Will Smyth called. We went to Uncle James' in the eve, had a letter from Jane.
29th-Went to preaching. May Beck came home with us. J.M.R. took J.C.K. up. He called. We went to preaching at night. He went along.
30th January '60-Helped milk and wash. John took Mary to Clintonville. There is a party at Mrs. Sterrets, but there is no way to go.
31st-Rose early, Mother helped me to milk. I done the ironing in the afternoon and went down and talked to John and Sarah awhile. Came home, knit some. Adieu to January 1860.
February 1st 1860-Was busy fixing all forenoon for the wedding. John and I went in the afternoon. We went over, had a very pleasant time. The wedding party all looked very nice.
2nd-Came as far as the Junction with the wedding party. Came home and Becca and Dave McCalmont were here. I had to take out one of my earrings, it hurt very badly.
3rd February-[We] were threshing and had 7 men. Churned, baked and swept and cooked for 10.
4th-I had 2 men cleaning up. Made 3 beds, swept the loft, helped get dinner, churned, helped get supper. Is pretty cold.
5th-We went to preaching in the sled. I am quite lonesome. Mary is going to hear Mr. Parks today. Uncle David called.
6th-Helped Milk, churn, wash and scrub. In the eve we went up with Mr. Transnes (?) to hear Mr. Seachirt, the Lutheran Preacher. He preached from the 13th chapter of Jeremiah, 21st verse. There is an eclipse of the moon tonight.
7th-We have a pair of nice twin lambs this morning. We have to feed them, the ewe is not able to get up. I ironed and put a binding on a shirt. John is away at Flemington.
8th February 1860-Churned. I was busy all day at things too numerous to mention. Rode to singing behind John.
9th-Helped do up the morning work. Went down to Uncle David's. Helped prepare for John's Infaire(?). Had 4 callers in the eve.
10th-Helped. Churned, swept, ate my dinner, went down to the Infaire, staid till 11 o'clock. Allie Millikin here. Ma and Pa and Henry Reed were here all night.
11th-Helped milk, made beds, carry wood and water, pared potatoes. Mary and John went down for her clothes.
12th-Mr. Yearick preached in our church. The bride and groom made their appearance, they looked very well.
13th-Went to wash but the cistern had but little water in it. We had to haul a barrel. We washed s___ __. Maggie Smyth, Sarah Poutins here visiting. Old Mr. Saks here all night. We milked and folded the clothes after dark.
14th-Helped churn, fed the calves, helped get dinner. In the afternoon ironed some. Mary went to the store.
15th-Helped milk, did other turns, churned, put in my ear drops. We done the milking early. Mr. Burlue here all night. We went to singing in the sled.
16th-Fed the calves. Commenced a double dozen blue and white quilt, pieced 2 patches.
17th Feb-One of my eyes is worse today. Did not do much of anything. Applied a rotten apple but it did not do any good. Jane Beck here in the afternoon. Stuart McC_ and John Floy called.
18th-My eye is some better. I churned. Mr. McMinn and Uncle David here for dinner. It has been snowing all day, the snow is pretty deep.
19th-Went to church in the morning.
20th-Helped wash and scrub, fixed some of my clothes. Mr. Miller McKean and John B. spent the eve with us.
21st-Papa and Mother went up the Valley. I done most of the ironing, baked some cakes, and went to singing at night.
22nd-Helped churn and bake doughnuts. Mary went down to Uncle David's. I done various things. We did our work early and went to our Concert. John Hays school from Howard was there. I helped sing a quartet, Soft and Sweet. The church was crowded, it was very muddy roads.
23rd-Helped milk. Cut out some patches for my quilt. Helped bake a sponge cake. Math. and Jane Tourie, Lucy and Lib McKean , Mary Millikin and Ag Nie here in the afternoon. Math., Jane, and Lib McKean staid all night.
24th-The strangers started. Mary went to Uncle John B's. to go to Howardville. Nan Elder here all night. Mother is down to see Aunt Jane L. She is very __. I milked in the eve.
25th-We have Threshers today. I churned. Went down to Mr. Foxs, came home, helped get dinner. In the afternoon Mary went to Beck's store. I went down to see Aunt Jane Smyth. I had just got home when Mr. J. Cyrus Kryder and Mr. Jake Crider came here, they stayed til bedtime.
26th-Sabbath, went to preaching in the morning. Papa and Mother went down to see Aunt Jane.
27th-Helped wash. Rose Shortlidge here visiting. We made me a new sunbonnet. We went to Uncle David's.
28th-Helped milk, scrub, iron, get dinner, __ __ oats. Pa and Ma went to Chist Yarger's daughter's funeral and went on up the Valley to Harter and Hoy's and took Mary to the Salona concert. I got supper, done the milking, done up all the work.
29th Feb-Helped milk, churned, brought down a bag of chaff for our bed. We got ready, went up to Uncle James', had a very muddy walk. Rose and Jane went up with us to Jims in the afternoon but we did not stay long. Mary Irwin and Rachel Thedous (?) came to Uncle's. We had to come down. We came to Singing Society, Cyrus Cryder and Will Elder teachers. John came up for us in the eve. It rained most all night. We had but a small turn out at singing.
March 1st 1860-We put a bag of chaff in our bed. I sewed at my quilt. Helped get dinner, helped wash dishes, helped fix in a quilt for Mary. Done some more at my quilt.
2nd-Went to Howardville to Sarah Sterrit's. In the afternoon Mary. J. and I went to visit Mag Beck's school. Went to John Hoy's singing at night. Called at Mr. Tifton's. (Mary got a cameo set of jewelry.)
3rd-Was reading most all morning. John Beck came over for Mag and I. I was at Uncle John's for dinner. Jane and Than came down here in the afternoon.
4th-We have no preaching this morning. Went to preaching in the eve. Heard a very good sermon.
5th-Helped churn and catch and clean chickens. We had six visitors. Mr. W.A. Sterret, Mr. John Neeley, W.L. McC_,
Jane R. McC_, R. Lourie, and Lib Sterret. Mr. Neely staid all night.
6th-Helped wash, scrub, churn. Went down to see Aunt Jane. I went to singing in the eve.
8th-Helped milk, churned, fed calves, helped get dinner. Mary went to the concert at Humburg.
9th-Lib Sterret came here with Will Smyth. My eyes are very sore. Will Allen came down in the eve and staid all night.
10th-Our company left this morn. Did not milk until 9 o'clock. Mary scrubbed and did other numerous things.
11th-Sabbath. Could not go to preaching. John and I kept house. Mary went down to see Aunt Jane in the eve. Papa got me some blue pill today.
12th-Eyes worse, could not do anything. Mary is washing. Mag Beck, Jane B. and John came here this morn to help Mary quilt. Lib Transne(?) and Harriet came this afternoon. Had a pleasant time.
13th-I am going to pile up what I did yesterday. Mary ironed and Mother baked.
14th-I cannot do anything yet. I can not go to singing. Mary went to singing on horseback.
15th-Time hangs heavily on me. Oh, how I wish my eyes were well. John and Mary went to prayer meeting tonight. Had a good many people there.
16th-Had threshers today. A good deal to do. I helped milk this morn. Have so much to do. Mary is sweeping, mother is baking. P.M.-Mary went to Nathan's, got some little neccesities.
17th-Beautiful day. I did not get up this morn until late as I could not do anything any how. Mary is tearing around at a great rate. Mother and her put in a quilt this eve. I do not know when it will come out. John has such sore boils on him he can hardly walk. Concert at Howard this eve. Jacksonville School is invited but I am afraid there will be a slim turnout. Mary cannot go as she has a very sore throat, so Good Night.
18th-Sabbath. Eyes worse. John and I kept house, the rest went to preaching. Had to stay in a dark room all day.
19th-Still acting lady. Mary and Mother very busy. This is wash day. Had company in the afternoon, ____ McKee and V. Beck.
20th-Eyes better but have to be very careful. Mary ironed. Mother baked.
21st-Mary churned in the morn. In the afternoon V.(or J?) Elders and Mat goron came to see me, had pleasent time. In the eve they all went to singing. Very cold and stormy. Got Bettits eye slave today and commenced using it.
22nd-I am so lonesome. Aunt Becca came this morn. Rose Shortlidge and Bob called to warm (?). Our folks are quilting. Mary churned this eve.
23rd-Friday. Eyes not any worse but didn't get much better. Mary swept and Mother baked. Emily Beck and Will here for dinner. J.M.K. here all night.
24th-Churned. Helped get dinner, washed the dishes, cleaned the chairs and doors. Pa went down to see Aunt Jane, she is better. John and Mary went down at night.
25th-Pa, Mary, and John went to preaching. Mother and I kept house. Mary staid up to hear Mr. Seachrist preach. I went out to see the lambs today.
26th-Mother and Mary washed. I churned, helped get dinner, washed the dishes. My right eye is more painful today. Pa and Ma went to Uncle James. Mrs. Shaw here this afternoon, spent a very pleasant time. Mr. Shaw here for supper and Jim Elder.
27th-Helped wash the dishes. Eyes better. Helped iron a little, washed the dishes. Rachel Beck here awhile. Mr. Robert Watson's are moving today down to the Washington farm. John is on the roads. Pa is ploughing. It has been very windy during the past week.
28th-Pa and Ma went to Clintonville. I had to feed a little lamb. I quilted a little, slopped the ewes. Mother got me a new shilling delain dress. John and Mary went to singing. Mother brought Allie M.'s book 'The Prince of the House of David'. Read some.
29th-One of my eyes is worse, the left one. Mary went to see Aunt Jane. I did not help to milk.
30th-Mother baked, Mary swept. Rose S. and Jane R. McC_ here spending the afternoon. Mother went down to see Aunt Jane. I helped milk.
31st-Helped milk, churned. Shut the geese up for picking. Mary went to Uncle John Beck's. Mr. Joseph McKibben was buried today. The roads are very dusty. Uncle D. called. John went down there.
April 1st 1860 Sabbath-It commenced raining about 10 o'clock. Mother and I kept house, the rest went to preaching. Eve-still storming but that turned to snow.
2nd-Churned. Mary and Mother washed. Jesse Cladfelter's moved today. Helped to get dinner, washed the dishes, mended 4 skirts. The little snow is most all gone. At night Pa read to me.
3rd-Helped milk. Done numerous other little things. Mag Smyth and Nathaniel Beck came here and staid all day. Mary went down with Mag to Uncle D's. John went down at night. Mr. Henry Frains moved down past here to Salma. Mr. John Royer moved down to their farm. Mr. J.S. helped them.
4th-I churned and scoured the knives and forks. Went to the barn looked for but found no goose eggs. It is a pretty day but somewhat muddy. John went to Flemington with a load of corn.
5th-Mary got us each a colier (?)dress made and began embroidering a blue flannel sack for Rettie Miller. I trimmed out a quince bush and helped milk in the eve. The doctor was here today, says he thinks my eyes are most well.
6th-Worked out in the yard trimming bushes most all forenoon. Helped scour tinware, went down to see Aunt Jane, she is getting better.
7th-Churned, rubbed my eyes. Billy Gibson came here for butter. Mary and I went to the ridge for land. Got a bench and box from the old house. Had some fun coming home. After dinner we worked in the garden after dinner. I digged some ground for cabbage seed. John and Mary went to singing.
