Notes for J
OSEPH DETOE:

From FTM Genforum "gary" gdboyer@ott.net
From the History of the Ditto Families; McDowell Publications, Utica, Ky, 1996:

There wre two groups of Ditto families in Pennsylvania at the close of the eighteenth century (1700's). The first group comprised the descendants Joseph "DeToe" (Ditto), who supposedly immigrated from Strassbourg, Alsace (now France). .... They settled first in Manhime (Manheim) Township, York County, Pennsylvania, which is just north over the State Line from Baltimore County, Maryland. There may have been a connection between the Dittos of York County and the Maryland Dittos in France before their immigrant ancestors came to America. Or, their immigrants may have been brothers--to return to that oft heard tradition about old Colonial families. Quite possibly, both Ditto families may have been native to Alsace before they had to flee the religious persecution against them and their "Reformed Religion" which was supported by King Louis XIV and his two Roman Catholic Cardinals, Richelieu and Mazarin, who also served as Ministers of State in the French government. They may have taken different routes before coming to the American Colonies. The Maryland Dittos are believed tohave gone first to Scotland and then to have arrived first in Delaware or Pennsylvania. The York County Dittos may have fled into the Rhineland of Germany and then immigrated with the Germans to Pennsylvania.

Tradition passed by the descendants of this Ditto line says that their immigrant was Joseph "DeToe" (Ditto) who was a native of Strassbourg in Alsace before coming to America in the early or mid-1700's. The referenced Orphan's Court Document identify his wife and the mother of the children as Barbara "DeToe".
They had eight children who are listed...

From the History of Perry County, Ohio;

Dittoe, Frank A, born May 9th, 1849, merchant, Somerset, Ohio. On his birth day, 1882, was married to Miss Mary E, daughter of Hon W E Finck, of Somerset. His father was Jacob Dittoe, a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, who came to Somerset with Franks's grandfather, Joseph Dittoe, in 1813. The great grandfather, whose name was also Joseph, came from Alsace, France, where the name spelled DeToe. Jacob Dittoe had an uncle John, who went to the State of New York, Francis, who died in PIckaway county, Ohio, Anthony, who died in Perry county, Ohio; Peter, who lived an died in Virgnia, all of whom were brothers of Joseph Dittoe, the grandfather of Frank. The mother of Jacob, and grandmother of Frank was, in her maiden days, a Miss Helen Grimm. The uncles of Frank A Dittoe were: John, a farmer of Perry, who died up in ninety years of age, in Perry County, Ohio; Michael, a carpenter, who died single in New Orleans, about the year 1829; Joseph, who was drowned in the Mississippi River a few years prior to the death of Michael, and Anthony Dittoe, the youngest brother of Jacob, who died in Edgar county, Illinois. Frank's father, Jacob Dittoe, was married in 1826 to Miss Sara, Cain, by Rev. N D Young.

Notes for B
ARBARA NOEL:

The administration of the estate of the estate of Barbara Deeto, 1772, admonistered by Casper White/Wise, York Co. Pa. Orphans Court Docket Book C, pg. 67 names her heirs as John, Jacob, Francis, Joseph, Anthony, Catharine and Mary. According to a study of the 1790 census, at the Adams Co. Historical Society John, Jacob and Joseph Ditto were still in Berwick Twp. in York, now Adams Co. Pa. Jacob and Joseph had children baptized at Conewago Chapel. Jacob is generally considered to be the Catholic Ohio pioneer.

Orphan Court Docket of York County, Pennsylvania, a Barbara Deeto died in 1772, leaving children John, Jacob, Francis, Michael, Anthony, Mary and Catherine.

From the History of the Dittos:

"We received some information from Nelson Nuttall which shows that Jacob was mentioned as one of the heirs of Barbara Deeto, deceased (Orphan Court Docket, Book C, page 67, dated 29 May 1772, York County, Pennsylvania). The list of heirs in the account of the Administrator shows the following: John (oldest son), Francis, Jacob, Joseph, Peter, Anthony, Cathrine, and Mary. Thus, it appears that Jacob was probably born in York County, Pennsylvania, which is one of the counties bordering just north of the Maryland Line.

John Ditto- He owned the tavern, The Sign of the Lamb as early as 1796 in Lisburn, Cumberland Co. Pa

from FTM Genforum, Mary Kelly Mills stock@detrax.net

John Ditto who married Margaret Hinkle, the daughter of John Justus Hinkle Was also known as John Deado. He was born 29-Sep-1758 and died 13-Nov-1816.He died in Mechanicsburg in Cumberland Co. Margaret was born 1-Jun-1761 and died 8-May-1834 Both are buried in Peace Church Cemetery, Mechanicsburg

He owned the tavern, The Sign of the Lamb as early as 1796 in Lisburn, Cumberland Co. Pa. Many of his descenants use the surname DittyI am not convinced he is the son of Barbara Deeto.

From Mary K. Mill, Hanover PA, April 2000

The Adminstration of the estate of Barbara Deeto names her eldest son as John. There aer several Johns who may be her son. See the other ditto families. There is a John Ditto listed on the same page of the 1790 census, mixed twps as Joseph Ditto, so I am assuming that he is the b/o Jospeh and the same John who had daughters baptized at Emanuel Church in Abbottstown, then known as Berwicktown. I do not know if he is the John Ditte etal spellings who moved to Virginia.
