Notes for Elizabeth Ann Symes:
Letters to Elizabeth Symes:
Nothwestern Branch,
National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers.
October 2, 1893
Respectfully returned to Major Moses Harris, Adjutant,
with the information that George Symes late of Company "C" 10th Cavalry T.A.P., was admitted to the hospital June 23, 1892, suffering from Emphysema of the lungs, Asthma, and Mitral disease of the Heart. Soon after his admission to the hospital, he grew rapidly worse; a well marked Cardiac Dropsy was soon developed, Ascitis supervened, Orthopreoea exsisted, so it was impossible for him to sleep in a recumbent position. The skin of the feet ruptured and the anasarcous fluid escaped from the cellular tissues in great profusion. So great were the physical and mental sufferings of this man, that he eagerly welcomed death as a relief. No information as to his religious feeling, prior to his death has been retained, except that he was a Protestant and was consigned to the grave by a Protestant clergyman and with the honors of War. Died August 4, 1892, at 3 o'clock p.m.
(Signed) W.N. Leighton, Surgeon.
October 3, 1892.
Respectfully returned to Mrs. Bessie Howard, Mulvane, Kansas, inviting attention to the enclosed report of the Surgeon of the Home, in this case, which is all the information obtainable concerning the last moments of your father. Respectfully,
Moses Harris, Adjutant and Inspector.
Also a letter from Reverend E. Purdon Wright, Milwaukee, Wiscinsin to Bessie, November 22, 1893. In part----
"Your father is buried in a Protestant Cemetary attatched to the Soldier's Home. His grave is numbered and a record kept of it, so that at any time you want to visit the spot it can be shown to you."
Reverend Wright had officiated at the burial service, but it had been over 1 year and 3 months before the inquiry so he could give no particulars. The burial was the 6th day of August, 1892.
A letter from George Symes:

Leavenworth County, Kansas--
June 16, 1890--
To My Beloved Daughter
"Elizabeth Anne" Howard, "there" Bessie that was the name the Redd Mr. Tucker of Musbury, Devonshire, Old England, gave you about thirty years ago; and 71 years ago, a week from tomorrow, viz. the 24th instant, I was first ushered into this "Christian"? world; and if the President of the United States signs the Pension Bill today (as is expected of him) I think I will manage to live about a dozen years longer. Well, how is the health of you and yours; and what are your crop prospects: I have not made up my mind where I will die yet; as Ed says, "There is nothing certain, but that and taxes". Please excuse my bad writting, as I am using a poor pen; & with kind love, I remain,
Yours & George Symes.
Write soon, as none of the others condescend to do so.
