  Notes for HENRY PRESTON HICKMAN:
Preston Hickman was a miner and a lumberman. He was a hard worker and was very successful during his lifetime. He was a Christian and a member of the Big Union Baptist Church at Dille, Clay County, WV.

He was a member of the Clay County Board of Education for many years and was President of the Board for a period of time. He was a leader in his community and many people came to him for advice and help.

At one time he had a permit to dig up the grave of Henry Young (who was his grandfather) who was buried on Powells Mountain. The first grave was on the original site where Young was killed during the Civil War by Yankees. Because of highway construction they had to move the grave to a different site on Powells Mountain.

The grave was dug up and it was proven that Henry Young was not running away from the enemy because there was a minnie ball hole in his forehead. When the graves were dug up, Henrys skeleton was intact and the only thing left of Lucinda was a comb that had been in her hair.

Preston said he remembered going to the funeral of Henry Young thirty-some years after Youngs death.

Preston and his wife Nettie are both buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Clay County, WV.
