George Milton HICKS (son of John Irvin HICKS and Phoebe Susanna WELLBANKS) was born 03 Jul 1882 in South Marysburg, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada, and died 19 Jul 1953 in Picton, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada. He married Sarah Arellia HUDGIN on 11 Oct 1905 in Picton, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada.
Notes for George Milton HICKS: George Hicks, born in 1882 left the farm at Point Traverse in 1913 to attend Embalming School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He purchased a business in Smithville where he lived from 1913 to 1920. but in 1921 he located in Picton, purchasing the Buchanan and Minaker business. In 1932 he was joined by his Son Winston. George Hicks' leadership was recognized in 1935 when he was appointed President of the Ontario Funeral Association. He was a Mason, a Kiwanian and a member of the Oddfellows Lodge. He served on the Hospital Board and the County C.A.S.
After finishing school, George Hicks bought a business in Smithville, in the Niagara district. A local man, Arthur Irvine became his partner. In 1921 they decided to relocate to Picton and G.M.Hicks returned to the county of his berth. In 1925 the partnership formed by Hicks and Irvine dissolved and Mr. Hicks took over the business. It included the Hicks Furniture Store.
George Hicks' eldest son Winston, joined him in business in 1932, and following his father's death continued to offer the same high level of professional service to the county. Mr. Hicks stressed service in his profession.
During the Second War, G.M.Hicks was a strong supporter of the Red Cross and other organizations working to help servicemen.
He served as a member of the Prince Edward County Hospital board and was president of the Prince Edward Children's Aid Society as well as a member of the above previously mentioned organizations.
He was also a valuable member of the United Church and served on the church board.
In the Picton Gazette report of his death, 50 years ago, Phil Dodds said G.M.Hicks was a kind and sympathetic friend to those in trouble. His quiet and helpful manner eased their sorrows. In the years shortly before his death, he was unable to attend every funeral service in person. However, he continued to take an active interest in business and spent much of his time at the furniture store.
"Without special advantages, he built up a business which is recognized among the leaders in the province and this can be attributed to the service rendered," stated the newspaper's report of his death.
G.M.Hicks was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, following a service at Picton United Church. Pall bearers were Dr. J. H. Walmsley. J.E. Baxter, Dr. S.W.D. Hart, W.H. Nettleton, Gordon Walmsley, QC and George Hudgin.
