In 1807 "The Ridge" and Andrew Sanders were assigned by the Cherokee Tribal Council to kill Chief Doublehead, who had illegally sold Cherokee land to outsiders. The assassination occured at the Hiwassee Garrison, TN, and there is an eye witness account by Caleb Starr.

"The Ridge" received the title "Major" as commander of the Cherokee Light Horse Constabulary; he had been a Captain in the Cherokee Regiment at the Battle of Horshoe Bend.

June 22, 1839 Major Ridge was shot from his horse on the road from Vinyard, AR by a number of Cherokees including the half-brothers Isaac and Anderson Springston, James Foreman, and Bird Doublehead. Bird was the son of Old Chief Doublehead who died at the hands of Major Ridge in 1807.
