Notes for E
THELENE JOHNETTA CROCKETT:
I remember that sometimes Ethelene (we called her "Young Ethelene") would come to stay with Nonnie. I must have been five or six. I had a sled for the winter and a red wagon for the summer. Ethelene would take me across Francis Street, to the top of the hill, where Biddle Street and Mechanic Street met. I could slide from Mechanic Street, down that hill, almost to Nonnie's house. Back then there wasn't much traffic and you could live dangerously like that. I think I got into to trouble for that too. [SOURCE: Maria Jackson Scott]

Ethelene Jones Crockett, M.D. and Ethelene Crockett Jones, M.D. (mother and daughter), practiced the same type of medicine (obstetrics/gynecology), at the same hospital, at the same time, in the same office, in Michigan. [SOURCE: Charles Hicks]

Aunt Ethelene received her undergraduate degree at Howard University. She went to medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI [SOURCE: Elizabeth Hicks]

Ethelene has won a number of awards and honors in her career. These include the following: Women's Equity Day Award from the Michigan Chapter of NOW (1992); Milliken Award from Planned Parenthood (1991); Outstanding Service Award from Michigan ACLU Chapter (1990); Women of the Year, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority (1990); BDPA Detroit Chapter Member of the Year (1989); Future Milwaukee's Community Leadership award (1981); and Howard University's Woman of the Year (1961). [SOURCE: Ethelene's Resume]

She served on a number of community and civic organizations during her career which included United Way of Greater Milwaukee; Milwaukee Forum; Planned Parenthood Board of Directors; Black Data Processing Associates; and Citizens for Personal Freedom. [SOURCE: Ethelene's Resum
Her career in medicine includes stints at Planned Parenthood; University of Michigan; Metro Medical Group; Medical College of Wisconsin; University of Wisconsin; and her current position as the Vice-Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Detroit Riverview Hospital. Ethelene was our grandmother. Nonnie's, favorite grandchild when we were growing up. She, George and I lived with Nonnie in Jackson while Mom went to Howard Medical School in Washington, DC. In Nonnie's eyes, "the baby" could do no wrong. Even when she (at about age 30 poured smelling salts up my nose as I lay on the sofa. Guess what! Nonnie chastised me telling me that had I not being lying on the couch (which rightly I was not supposed to be doing), my face and head would not feel like it was on fire. Addendum: Now that we are both grown, I really appreciate that Lennie (as she is now called) is the best sister I could ever have! (SOURCE: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks)

Aunt Ethelene's hobby is computers. Actually, for awhile it was more than a hobby. She formed a corporation called Gelento. Gelento was a vehicle for Aunt Ethelene to turn some of her medical ideas into software products. She created software packages that could be used by Planned Parenthood centers and other medical units across the country. Gelento stock was purchased by other members of the family. Aunt Ethelene once created an electronic bulletin board system for the Black Data Processing Associates chapter in Detroit. She gives names to her computers. One of them was named Lucy. She gave Lucy to my Mom in 1997. At that point Aunt Ethelene bought a new computer and named her 'Rita'. [SOURCE: Wayne Hicks]

Ethelene enjoys her "retirement" very much because she has the opportunity to commit to community activities and "giving back". She is a member of the Executive Cmte of the ACLU (Amer. Civil Liberties Union) of Florida and President of the Palm Beach County chapter. She is also on the Exec. Committee of Planned Parenthood of the Greater Miami, Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast - the largest affiliate in Florida. [SOURCE: Ethelene Crockett Jones, MD]
