Notes for G
EORGE ALFRED PETERSON:
George Alfred Sahlbom was the first "Sahlbom" born to this family in America on 24 April 1887 in Worthington, Nobles County, Minnesota. His birth certificate (filed in Book A, Page 112, Line 276 on 25 April 1887) shows: Name of Father: Anthony Salbaum and father's place of birth not shown but his occupation as laborer. Name of mother just shows Christena. George is not named on his birth certificate.
George's mother, Mathilda Kristina Dahlstedt, froze to death while her husband was off working in the logging camp, leaving Anton, his father, with two small boys. After this, Anton and the boys went to Sioux City, Iowa. George was apparently suffering from some congestive problems and Anton didn't want to travel on with him and wanted to leave him with some acquaintances, but they refused to keep George unless they could adopt him; so, on the 5th day of July, 1889, George Alfred Sahlbom was adopted by Frank A. and Christina E. Peterson, and George became George Alfred Peterson. And for some reason, this is when his date of birth seemed to change from 24 April 1887 to 24 Apr 1888, which George used throughout his life.

ADOPTION PAPER:
Filed for record April 27, 1889 at 2 o'clock pm. C. A. Dennen - Recorder. G. A. Messinger - Deputy.

This indenture witnesseth: That whereas Frank A. Peterson and Christine E. Peterson, husband and wife, both of the age of majority, residents of Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, are desirous of adopting as their own child the infant son of A. W. Sahlbom, residing at Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, said child being about one year three months old.
And whereas the mother of said child is dec'd and the father this said A. W. Sahlbom, having full authority over and control of said child is willing that he should be adopted.
Now, therefore, we, Frank A. Peterson and Christine E. Peterson do by these presents adopt the said boy as our own child, confirming upon him all the rights, privileges and responsibilities which would pertain to him, if born to us in lawful wedlock, agreeing to treat and educate him as our own child. And I, A. W. Sahlbom, father of the said child do hereby consent to the adoption of him by the said Frank A. Peterson and Christine E. Peterson and give him to them for the purposes of adoption.
And it is further agreed by and between all the parties hereto, that hereafter the said child shall be called and known as George Alfred Peterson.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 5th day of July, 1888.

After the adoption, Anton and young son Olaf settled in Bellingham, Washington.

The 1900 census records for Iowa record George as being an inmate at the Industrial School for Boys in Eldora, Iowa, which we would call a "reform school."

George's first marriage was to Ruth Wagner and produced three children: Inez (1912), Audrey (1914) and Chester (1916). Being a "free spirit", after one of his liaisons with a judge's daughter, a then pregnant and a rightfully hostile wife, George was persuaded to leave his happy home in 1917. They were divorced on 6 Nov 1917 with Ruth having custody of the children. It's believed that George married the judge's daughter. At a later date, Ruth received a request for funds from him.

According to his Certificate of Death and the VA headstone application, George serviced in WWI between 5 Oct 1917, to 17 Dec 1918, as an Army private. He served in the 323 A.R.D. Veterinary Detachment as a farrier, or shoer of horses. He joined the Army in Harrison, Nebraska, and was discharged at Camp Trenton (or Fenton), Kansas. His serial number was 2198086. He is buried in the veterans memorial part of Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery in Seattle, Washington. He is listed as a veteran of Wyoming. His birth date was listed as 8 Apr 1888, and later changed to 1887.

George's marriage to Hazel Shrove produced two children: Richard George Peterson and Carmen Urlene Peterson, who was born in 1818. Carmen was married three times, and by her marriage to a "Galliano", she had two children: Richard and Carmen Rose.... I believe it is Richard Galliano who is now in touch Inez (Peterson) McDonell, granddaughter of George, whose mother was Ruth Wagner Peterson.

George died in Seattle, Washington, on Wednesday, 21 Aug 1946, of acute cardiac failure. He had lived at 4732 Delridge Way, Seattle, for 22 years. He was married at the time to Cornelia, and his occupation was listed as box maker for Booth Fisheries.

His adoptive parents: Frank died around 1914 or 1916 and Christine died in 1935 and was buried September 23, 1935 in Block 330, Lot 1, Floyd Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.

How sad that the brothers, George and Olaf, both lived their final years within 60 miles of each other but were never to be in touch with each other again after George's adoption in 1888! And never knew where the other brother was!
