She was born June 25, 1936 in Fairmont, WV. She was the daughter of George William Crockett, Jr and Dr. Emily Ethelene Jones.
Notes for Richard Wayne Hicks, Sr.:
Dad is the only child of Izona and Walter who was born in a hospital. Dad's name - Richard Wayne Hicks - comes from Papa Hicks (Richard) and the physican who delivered Dad (Wayne). All of the other children were born at the house. Aunt Betty helped deliver the children born after Dad. [SOURCE: Charles Hicks]
Actually I only assisted with the birth of Anita - it took too long for Walter to get Dr. Wayne (our family doctor who delivered all the other children) to the house; when he arrived Anita was already "delivered" with instructions from Mama who directed the cutting of the umbilical cord! What a day!!! [SOURCE: Betty Hicks Johnson]
Did you know that Dad purchased his first car when he was 15-16 years old. He save his money and purchased the car against Walter's wishes. Dad did not have a driver's license. Knowing that it would anger Walter, he parked the car around the block at a friend's house. [SOURCE: Charles Hicks]
Dad, as you know, has a 1943 Aeronca airplane. It was used to quickly spot enemy troops during WWII; thus, the name "spot plane". Did you know that Uncle Jim was a pilot (enlisted man) during WWII and actually flew Aeroncas as a "spot plane" pilot - the exact type owned by Dad. Uncle Jim never flew again after the war. One of Wayne's hobbies (besides voracious reading) is flying...he, as pilot. He has two planes; a 1943 Aeronca fighter and a 1960s Mooney. Our children were college age before they knew what it was to travel across country on any plane but Dad's. The plane has taken us to Houston, Atlanta, Tulsa, Chicago, Detroit to name a few places. Wayne flew Kyra and Iyisa to DC to see their Granddaddy Crockett on the floor of the United States House of Representatives. (SOURCE: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks)
Dad retired in September 1996. He was an aeronautical engineer. He was involved in development of systems used on the NASA space shuttles. He attended Booker T. Washington HS in Tulsa, OK. He received a BS Aeronautical Engineering and Mathematics from the University of Michigan (C'1957). He received Masters degree in both of these subjects as well. It was at the University of Michigan that he met his wife, Elizabeth Crockett. [SOURCE: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks]
Notes for Elizabeth Ann Crockett:
Liz graduated high school from the Windsor Mountain School in Lennox, MA in 1954. That was the same year that she met the man her eventual husband, Richard Wayne Hicks. They met in December 1954 while both were students at the University of Michigan. Wayne was a sophomore at the time. Liz was a freshman. They met when Wayne asked Liz for a dance at a Christmas social co-sponsored by the Kappas and AKAs. "After the dance I didn't hear from him and could not find him in the school directory. I had all the girls on my corridor looking for him. All I knew was that his name was Wayne and he lived in the Kappa House whose address I did not know. We looked for days. Of course, he was not listed under Wayne, but under his first name, Richard. I really do not remember when we met again." [SOURCE: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks]
Liz earned her airplane pilot's license in July 1975. Liz received her BA, Elementary Education from San Fernando Valley State College (now known as Cal-State Northridge). She received her Masters in English in the 1977 from Laverne College. [SOURCE: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks]
Did you know that due to the poor vision in Mom's left eye, she has little-to-no depth vision, and has always been that way. [SOURCE: Charles Hicks]
Liz Hicks has been a teacher for over 30 years. In Sept 1997 she will move out of the classroom and become a fulltime Dean of Students at Horace Mann Jr. High School in Los Angeles, CA. Her hobbies are online communications and needlepoint on plastic canvas. Liz is an elder in the Presbyterian church and the Clerk of Session at her local church. [SOURCE: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks]
