Notes for RICHARD HICKS:
The slaveowner that owned Richard was his father. This slaveowner was a white Irish man.Walter used to talk about how his father would become upset when he talked about seeing his full white brother(s) playing while he had to work. [SOURCE: Marian Hunter]
My great-grandfather (Richard 'Poppa' Hicks) was married for many years to Cassie Hicks. He reported to census-takers that his mother was born in Mississippi. We find in the 1870 TX Caldwell Co Census another Richard HICKS who was 35 years old at the time and married to a wife named Dilsy.Guess where Dilsey was born?!Yep, Dilsey was born in MISSISSIPPI.Therefore, it is a safe assumption that Dilsey will turn out to be Poppa Hicks' mother. It should be noted that Richard is listed in the 1880 Census as a 'mulatto'.Additionally, in that census he claimed that he didn't know where his father was born ("unknown").Dilsey is listed in the 1870 Census as 'Black'.Could it be that Dilsey had Richard by a white man?All of the other Hicks families listed are white.Time for some more research![SOURCE:Alice Ellingsberg, [email protected]]
1880 TX Caldwell Co Census shows Richard as a 47-year old single Blackman.Where did Dilsy go in the past decade? He is listed as a farmer who's parents both were born in Virginia. He also is listed with five children in this 1880 census:Zenny (12f), Mahala (11f), Cibola (10f), Judge (6m), and Manny (4m).[SOURCE: 1880 TX Caldwell Co Census]
1900 TX Caldwell Co Census shows Richard Hicks as a 63-year old Blackman married to Cresa Hicks.Cresa is listed as a 63-year old woman who was born in Alabama [SOURCE: 1900 TX Caldwell Co Census]
Richard's year of birth varies from census to census.1870 = 35 years old; 1880 = 47 years old; 1900 = 63 years old.Census takers weren't very careful about such things....and sadly, many African Americans born into slavery really had no idea when they wer born.[SOURCE: Alice Ellingsberg]
