Obituary published in the "Terre Haute Tribune," Friday, July 22, 1960, page 2: "WEST UNION, Ill., July 22. - (Special)-Herschel Higginbotham, 57 years old, of RR 1, West Union, died at 12:45 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Paris Hospital. Surviving are the widow, Dema; two sons, Ronald of Marshall, Ill., and Robert Higginbotham, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Lula Bierbaum of Marshall, Mrs. Hattie Lederman of RR, West Union, and Mrs. Mattie Carpenter of RR 2, West Union; and four brothers, Ed Higginbotham of RR 2, West Union, Ott and Harry, both of Marshall, Ill., and Ormal of Martinsville, Ill. Services will be at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Harrison cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel after 7 o'clock Friday evening."

Cause of death: Bronchogenic carcinoma of lung (" lung cancer").
Additional complication not related to cause of death: Chronic glomerulonephritis ("Bright's disease").
Attending physician: Charles A. McClelland, M.D., Paris Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel, West Union, Illinois on July 23, 1960. Officiating was Reverend Robert Shepard. Pallbearers were Gordon Coryell, Hermann Timms, Dale Clatfelter, Tom Hill, Fred Gard, and John Sydnor. Pianist was Helen Crumrin.

Notes for Ormal Higginbotham:
Ormal and Opal lived with Ormal's parents until within a year after Louise was born. They moved to their own home in Dolson Township before April 14, 1930 (the date of the 1930 Census). While living in Dolson Township, the Martinsville area, Hazel, Chester, and Floyd were born. Sometime after Floyd was born, 24 May 1935, the family moved about one and one-half miles east on the same road in Dolson Township near the Brossman school. At this home, Charles and Gene were born. About 1940 the family moved to Orange Township and lived there about six years. Rosemary and Robert were born there. The children attended the Fairview School, Martinsville area. The family moved back north to Auburn Township, Martinsville area. All the children lived there until they married and left home. Ormal and Opal finished the duration of their lives there. The address is 9405 East Cline Orchard Road, Martinsville, IL 62442. All six boys are farmers. Louise's husband, Earl Dean Veach, was a farmer and lived in Hunt City, Illlinois. Hazel's husband, Guy Austin, was an over-the -road semi-truck driver. Rosemary's first husband, Herman Thompson, was a farmer and auto body repairman. Published obituary: "Ormal Higginbotham, 73, of Rt. 3, Martinsville, died Saturday at Paris Community Hospital. He was born Feb. 10, 1904.
Survivors include his wife, Opal; six sons, Clifford, Charles, Floyd and Robert of Martisville, Chester of Paris, and Gene of Marshall; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Austin and Mrs. Rosemary Thompson, both of Marshall; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Ledermann of West Union; 28 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
The body was moved from Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union to Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville.
Funeral services were Tues., Nov. 8, 1977, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Glenn Arbuckle officiating.

He was the youngest son of John and Amy Lewis Higginbotham, born at West Union, Illinois on February 10, 1904. He departed this life November 5th, 1977 at 1:45 p.m. at the age of 73 years 8 months 26 days.
Ormal was united in marriage to Opal Alexander April 10, 1926. To this union was born nine children.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Mrs. Louise Veach, Mother and Father, four sisters and five brothers.
Surviving are the wife Opal, two daughters Mrs. Hazel Austin, Mrs. Rosemary Thompson of Marshall, six sons, Clifford, Floyd, Charles, Robert of Martinsville, Gene of Marshall, Chester of Paris and one sister Mrs. Hattie Ledermann of West Union, Illinois.
Also twenty eight grandchildren, seven great grandhcildren [sic] and a host of relatives and friends."

Mrs. Higginbotham was born August 12, 1907 in Melrose Township, Clark County, to John W. Alexander and Carrie C. Wood Alexander. She was preceded in death by husband Ormal Higginbotham on November 5, 1977.
She was a homemaker and member of the Five Points Christian Church, rural Marshall and also a member of the Friendship Club.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Clifford and Kitty Higginbotham, Charles and Phyllis Higginbotham, Gene and Judy Higginbotham, Floyd and Glenda Higginbotham, Robert and Sheryl Higginbotham, all of rural Martinsville, and Chester and Beverly Higginbotham of Paris, IL; daughters and son-in-law Hazel and Guy Austin of Marshall and Rosemary Thompson of Marshall; son-in-law Earl Veach and his wife, Sharon; sister Mary Crumrin of West York; brothers Dean and Everett Alexander, both of Marshall; 32 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 8 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews."
