JULIUS BATES was born June 3, 1780 in Greenville, SC. His parentage has not been proven, and there are a great many of his descendants seeking this information. He had a brother MAJOR GENERAL JOHN BATES and a sister ELIZABETH BATES JACKSON. He m. Temperence WEST about 1802 in SC. He moved his family to Georgia in 1815, and settled on 250 acres in Jackson Co. In 1818 his settlement became part of Hall Co. and the family resided there until 1832. The Julius Bates Family moved to Murray Co. in 1832 as a result of the Cherokee Land Lottery. Julius was a prosperous farmer and managed to acquire a substantial amount of land. By 1860 he is believed to have owned over 2000 acres, and also owned ten slaves. Five of his sons and thirteen of his grandsons were Confederate Soldiers in the Civil War. Julius died Feb 17, 1864, and his wife Temperence died June 10, 1868. They are buried at their homeplace, next to each other at the family cemetery in Murray Co., GA.
