Classmates mourn 'sweet young lady'

POTTSTOWN - Teachers and classmates of Amanda Shultz, the seventh-grader who was killed Friday in a devastating car crash, turned to counselors Monday to deal with their grief.
"She was a very sweet young lady," said Pottstown Middle School language arts teacher Diane Halpine. "She was a very down-to-earth person. She made friends very easily." Amanda was killed early Friday morning along with family friends Christopher J. Blair, 28, and Jonathan Blair, 8, both of Philadelphia, in a car accident on Route 44 in Hebron, Potter County, according to police. Christopher Blair, the driver of the 2002 Infiniti, was Jonathan Blair's uncle, police said. The cause of the accident is still being investigated. Amanda's 6-year-old sister, Kayelynn, suffered minor injuries in the one-car accident near Route 49. The children's mother, Jeannie K. Shultz, 36, remains hospitalized with major injuries, according to police. School District Director of Community Relations John Armato said many students at the middle school were having difficulty dealing with the sudden loss of a classmate. "We called in district guidance counselors to assist children and staff who were having difficulty coping with Amanda's passing away," he said. Armato said a room was set up at the school where students could go to talk about their feelings or participate in a number of activities, including writing letters and drawing posters, all of which will be given to the Shultz family. Amanda was a member of the flag corps in the middle school band. One of the flags will be signed by students and presented to the family, Armato said. Social studies teacher Dee Pettine said Amanda was a pleasure to have in class. "She was sweet, always friendly," Pettine said. "She got along with everyone." Armato said a letter went home with students Monday to inform parents about the loss. Also sent home was a booklet describing ways to help children deal with the death of a friend. "It's a tragic accident when someone dies," Armato said. "But more so when it's someone so young, someone who hasn't had a chance to experience life." A funeral for Amanda will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Catagnus Funeral Home on North Franklin Street.
