Below is a letter that was found on page 36 in a book titled; "Sketches of Union Co. 1987." This letter was edited by Ted Oliver and is concerned with the Civil War and its effects on Union County, Georgia. I have received information from a distant cousin, Stevie Lou Powell, that this letter was written to his son, Richard, whom was living in Kentucky. (03/07/99) E.M.H.III

June 28, 1866

Blairsville, Georgia 30512

Dear Son,
Yesterday I received a letter from you written May 20th in which I learned, that up to that time you had heard nothing from me, it is strange I know that I have written to you, and I intend to continue to
write until you do hear from me. I have nothing to write more than I have written to you before, but perhaps you have received them, all the family whom are well. Sarah, Lafayette, and Polly are with me. Rebecca is living with old Mrs. Hunt, her husband (Binum Hunt) was killed at Chickamauga, she has one child.
John was in the war until the surrender, he and family are well one of his little boys died since the war. I have heard nothing from Reuben since the war closed he was in the war. The last I heard of him I really expect he is dead.
Times are very hard in this county everything is scarce and reasonably high, corn is selling at $2.00, bacon at 25 cents and many families have been entirely without a meal all summer and a great part of the time without bread, we are now harvesting we only have about half a crop. I think corn is the least I ever saw in this time of the year, we have an abundance of fruit if you get this letter answer it immediately and give me all the news.
I wrote you in my last letter of the death of Andrew, he died in December last. He had been licensed to preach 3 years, he left every evidence that he was going to rest, and I do feel that our loss is his gain. Let us my son so conduct ourselves here in this life that our last days may be like his, and as last meet him in Heaven. However lightly religion may be esteemed by men. In a dying hour we will be complied to acknowledge that it is the one thing needful and of more importance than
all other things.
I will close, I am forever your father.
