Below is a story that was found on page 106 in a book titled; "Sketches of Union Co. 1987." It was written by Mark Kelley, a nephew of John's. I have know idea who's child Mark is. (03/07/99) E.M.H.III

Uncle "Stumpy" Kelley

Once I had an uncle named "Stumpy" Kelley. He was called that because he was so short. Early one Sunday morning he went out to the smokehouse to fill up his syrup pitcher. Back then they stored their syrup in large wooden barrels. The syrup was cold so it ran out very slowly. Uncle Stumpy decided to go do his chores while the syrup pitcher was filling up. While doing his chores he forgot about his syrup and went on to Sunday school. At the end of the service they called upon Uncle Stumpy to lead them in prayer. In his prayer he said, "O Lord my syrup pitcher runneth over". He ran out of the church with the whole congregation following him. When he got to the smokehouse, it was ankle deep in syrup. He rolled up his pants legs, waded in and grabbed the stopper and put it in the hole and said, "Amen".

Notes for Reuben S. Kelley:
Kelley, R.S. - Private - March 19, 1862. On July 29, 1862, Colonel J. A. Glenn "ordered one E. H. Edwards to proceed to Knoxville, Tennessee for the purpose of getting privates R.S. Kelley and Wash Kelley (A.W.) who were confined in jail as deserters. "No later record".

LeAnn Kelley did this research and has noted that : Reuben used to always go AWOL to come home and work the fields because he was the sole provider....And when going back he would strap corn on his back and swim across the Tennessee River (which most could not do) to take back to the other soldiers that didn't have anything to eat.

My father (Eddie M. Hill, Jr.) has told me that his mother, Addie Chloe Kelley, remembered when she was a little girl of the stories that were told of a Kelley that would come home during the Civil War, dress-up as a woman so he could work the fields and not get caught, then return to the war. Wonder if this was Reuben?
