the Bowling's were known to be staunch Republicans.
"Henry was a logger, carpenter, and a mill owner. He was known for his beautiful orchards and his gift for helping the sick. He owned property in various parts of KY, VA, and OH." He lived in Pike Co KY on Bowling Fork. His great-granddaughter Sue Ann Bowling Bartley is quoted as follows: "My great-grandparents Henry Sr.and Rebecca Bowling settled about three miles of property from Semet Solvay to Dorton to Peabody Coal at Allegheny. This hollow (Bowling Fork) had its own public school, where each of us attended."
from 1976-1977 recording with Margaret Metcalf, Henry's granddaughter.
I remember stories of Grandpa barging goods down the Sandy River. My Grandfather, Henry Bolling, gave each of his children land. His place was about 25 miles from Pikeville, in coal country. My parents' (Eli Ramey and Tempe Bowling) farm was about 3/4 of a mile from Grandpa's place.
Grandpa Bolling did all kinds of tree grafting, and was our neighborhood doctor- everyone thought well of him. He had a well out back of his place with an oaken bucket and oh, that water was so good! Had a sweep clear out to the orchards. He kept bee stands in the orchard, and there was a wash tub, as long as a lounger, near the well. The wash tub had been dug out of an old log, and had battling places on each end. We used battling sticks to beat the clothes clean instead of wash boards. We had some forks set up out there, an iron rod went from one fork to the other with a big iron kettle on it. We put all our sheets in the kettle and boiled them. We had the prettiest washings. Grandpa youngest boy, Henry, got the place after his folks died.
Grandpa had a coal mine, he had a grate in the house where he burned coal to keep the house warm. He and young Henry would go over to the mine with old Donk, and a sled and bring it back.
