Concerning his first marriage (to Susannah Adkins): In "Marriage Bonds Of Pike County 1822-1865" by Clyde Runyon, file No. 866, page 145, says a license was issued Sept 18, 1846, by John D. Mims, Clerk, for marriage of Henry Bowling and Susannah Adkins with necessary certificate from Sarah Bowling (Henry's mother) and oral consent from Susannah. Bond by Henry Bowling and Jackson Fry.
Letter dated Sep 18, 1846, authorized by issuing of license, signed by Sary (sic) Bowling (by mark) and attested by Jackson Fry and A.J.Bowling.
Henry Bowling and Susannah Adkins were married Sept 20, 1846, by William Ramey, Justice of the Peace. Some sources show A.J. Bowling (Andrew Jackson Bowling) to be Henry older brother.
In the Pike County census of 1850, Henry was listed as 24, Susannah 22, And Lewis 3. Three were also three Adkins children: George W. 15, Minerva J. 11, and Rebecca V. 9. Tradition says that the home was broken up when Henry's small son was killed by a rolling log and Susannah died a short time later.
