James BOWLING, born on 17 April 1857 at Pike Co, KY; died aft 1910; buried at Dorton, Pike Co, KY. James was a surveyor and a farmer. His marriage to Sophia Smallwood took place at the home of E. R. Smallwood with Smallwood and Hulda Hylton as witnesses. James and Sophia lived in Pike Co KY. One source said that he was buried in Waynesburg KY. But "Pike County Historical Papers No. 6" says he and Sophia were buried in the Smallwood Cemetery in Dorton, Pike Co, KY.
In the 1880 census he was listed as 23 years old and his wife was 27. In the 1900 census they reported: James, 43, born Feb 1857, married 27 yrs; Sophia, 46, born April 1854, married 27 yrs. They had two children. In the 1910 census they were still living near the Smallwoods, but had no living children.
