"When I was about 14 or 15 years old, Uncle J.M. visited my father and mother. He begged my mother to let him take me home and raise me as his own. He said he would educate me and it wouldn't cost my parents a penny. Uncle J.M. had lost his little girl, and his first wife, Martha. he had remarried, but had no children of his own. My father said "No, she's my housekeeper."
That's all my father wanted me for. He often said that he wasn't going to let me get married, and if I ever did marry, he wasn't going to let me live with my husband. "
