Descendants of Slaughter Hill

Generation No. 1

1. SLAUGHTER1 HILL was born Abt. 1802 in ?, NC, 1850 & 1860 Federal Census, and died 28 May, 1861 in Lanier, Macon Co, GA1. He married (1) ELIZABETH MAULDEN 31 Jan, 1828 in Macon, Bibb Co, GA2, daughter of CALEB MAULDEN and JUDITH. He married (2) SARAH E. WATERS3 22 May, 1860 in Lanier, Macon Co, GA4, daughter of TRISHAM WATERS and MARIAH DUNLAP.

Notes for S
LAUGHTER HILL:
SLAUGHTER HILL (2) was born in the state of North Carolina according to the Georgia 1850 and 1860 census for Macon County. His age as listed by the census reports would place the his birth somewhere between 1802 and 1803. (Note: The census for both these years reported the age of an individual as of 1 June of the reported year). The name of his parents or the county in which he was born is unknown as of this writing. However, because of Slaughter's uncommon first name, I believe he is related to a SLAUGHTER HILL (1) shown in the Halifax and Robeson Co, NC census' for the years 1790 through 1810. SLAUGHTER HILL's (1) WILL does eliminate SLAUGHTER HILL (2) as a son, but it is possible he may be a grandson or possibly a nephew.

SLAUGHTER HILL (2) is first documented as living in Bibb County, Georgia sometime in the 1820's. The Macon Messenger Newspaper published a list on July 17, 1827, of unclaimed letter being held at the Macon Georgia Post Office. A SLAUGHTER HILL was indicated as having mail there as of July 1, 1827. There is record of his marriage to an ELIZABETH MAULDEN, (who was born about 1807 in South Carolina), of Macon Georgia on 31 JAN 1828. Her father, CALEB MALDEN Sr., was supposedly the oldest citizen in Macon at the time of his death in 1855. CALEB MAULDEN's, 24 Jan 1855 WILL, lists ELIZABETH as the wife of SLAUGHTER HILL. The 1830 Bibb County, Georgia Census shows SLAUGHTER HILL's, age 20-30, his wife, age 20-30, and a son, age 5-10.

It is not known when SLAUGHTER HILL and his family departed the town of Macon. He is listed twice during 1832 in the Columbus Inquirer Newspaper located in Muscogee County. The January 1, 1832 newspaper indicated he had mail waiting at the Talbotton Georgia Post Office. He is also listed as a participant of a Land Lottery for the 5th days drawings, in Talbot Co, Georgia, on October 26, 1832. It must be noted that most of SLAUGHTER's land holdings in Macon County were originally part of Muscogee County Georgia and Marion County Georgia.

Another newspaper article appears on page 239, under Notices, in ??? 183? about some escaped slaves. It reads: Run away from subscriber's plantation in Marion County on the 5th of this month, two negroes, to wit, a fellow named Moses, 27 years old, black complexion, full face, chumky build, weighs 170 pounds, and a woman named Melita, 26 years old, yellow complected and full mouth. It is supposed the negroes are somewhere in Columbus. The man was bought in Talbot and the woman in Bibb county. A twenty-five dollar reward will be paid for their delivery to me in the 1st district of Marion County on the Flint River. (Signed) Slaughter Hill.

Somewhere between the 1830 census and the 1838 Tax Digest he moved his family near the town of Lanier, in Macon County, Georgia. According to a book on The History of Macon Co, written by Mrs. Louise F. Hays, Lanier no longer exists today but was located about 6 miles north of present day Oglethorpe, Georgia. All reminents of the town disappeared by 1868, except for the few tombstones of the Lanier's cemetary.

SLAUGHTER's name appears in Georgia's 1838 Tax Digest for Lanier with the following personal and real property:

      Slaves - 3
Land - 858 acres in districts 1 and 15 of Macon County
      Mills - 4 1/2
      Money - 1 dollar and 73 cents

According to Deed Book A, of Macon Co., GA. SLAUGHTER HILL purchased 778 1/2 acres of land in Lot numbers 70, 81, 82, and part of 83, of District 1, Macon Co., GA. in from a William N.L. Crocker of Macon Co., GA on 25 September 1850. This deed was not recorded until 12 June 1861

The 1852 Tax Digest only indicates property acquired by SLAUGHTER HILL equaling a value of $20,000 and identified as Lot #90, District #1, Macon Co., GA. Also listed is a column identified as "Other", showing a value of $18,369. The 1860 census indicates he had as many as 41 slaves.

Records show SLAUGHTER as a successful farmer and one of the first residents and a prominent citizen of Lanier and Macon County. He was the Justice of Inferior Court from 18 Feb 1839 to 14 Jan 1841, a position later held twice by his oldest son WILLIAM W. HILL. SLAUGHTER HILL is also listed as one of the trustees appointed in the incorporation of the Lanier Male and Female Academy in 1838. This academy was one of the first educational institutions in Macon County. His second son CALEB FREEMAN HILL was one of the last trustees when the academy disbanded in 1868.

There is no indication when his first wife ELIZABETH died, but it was most likely before 1860. She is mentioned in her father's 1855 Will but is not shown on the 1860 Georgia census.

SLAUGHTER HILL had 3 sons and 3 daughters by his marriage to ELIZABETH MAULDEN: WILLIAM W, CALEB FREEMAN, HOWARD C, JULIA A, MARGARETT E, and FRANCES C. The list of their children was reconstructed from the 1850 and 1860 census reports and from SLAUGHTER HILL's WILL, dated 20 May 1861.

A second wife, SARAH E. WATERS is not mentioned by name in his WILL. However, a son between her and SLAUGHTER HILL, named JEFFERSON DAVIS HILL is shown. The 1860 census shows SARAH E. HILL, age 21, residing with SLAUGHTER HILL, his son HOWARD, and his daughter FRANCES C.. The 1860 census also indicates both SLAUGHTER and SARAH were married within the year. Macon county records show a SLAUGHTER HILL marrying a SARAH E. WATERS on 22 May 1860.

SLAUGHTER HILL made provisions for SARAH's support in a pre-marriage agreement of their "Intermarriage" for a payment of $10,000. This insured the children of his first marriage received a rightful inheritance upon his death. SARAH E. HILL received $10,404.43 dollars from the executor of SLAUGHTER's WILL, (WILLIAM W. HILL), on 20 December 1862 as full payment of the marriage settlement.

SLAUGHTER's only child, JEFFERSON DAVIS HILL, by his marriage to SARAH, was born 27 April 1861 and died 11 Sep 1863. He is buried in the Pleasant Grove Methodist cemetary across from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Georgia county road 287, just south of highway 127. SARAH's parents T.S. WATERS (father), b: 18 Jan 1815, d: 25 Mar 1889, and M.A. WATERS (mother), b: 7 Jun 1823, d: 29 Jan 1895.

Mrs Sarah E. Hill married John W. McKellar, a prominent doctor of the community, in 1865 to become his 4th wife.

An obituary notice in the "Macon Messenger" newspaper reports Slaughter Hill died 28 May 1861.

SLAUGHTER HILL is buried in an unmarked grave near his home which is listed as the "Wadsworth Place" in a book on the History of Macon County written by Louise F Hays in 1933.

** Points of Research Interest **

      1. Initial family history from relatives on SLAUGHTER HILL(2) reported he was in the Confederate Army assigned to Co C, 12th Georgia Volunteer Infantry (Davis Rifles). I have completed further research and have found there was another SLAUGHTER HILL(3) from Macon County who was born 10 October 1840. It was this SLAUGHTER HILL(3) and not my distant ancestor who was assigned to this unit.

      2. There is a also a possibility that this SLAUGHTER HILLl(3) may be a relative because of the unusual first name. He was the son of a JOHN HILL who came to Macon Co and was originally from NC. My research on SLAUGHTER HILL(1) from the Robeson/Halifax Co, NC areas indicates he had a son JOHN, that was born approximately the same time as the JOHN Hill in Macon Co. I hope to prove SLAUGHTER HILL(3) is a nephew/cousin of SLAUGHTER HILL(2) and therefore making my Georgia family line link with the North Carolina SLAUGHTER HILL(1) family lines .

      3. A Mrs OMA BARFIELD or Mrs ORRA BARFIELD, depending on the interpretation of the writing, is mentioned in SLAUGHTER HILL's WILL. Initial appearances would indicate she was his wife. However, I have not been able to find record of the marriage recorded in the probate records of Macon county. SLAUGHTER HILL may have been legal guardian/trustee for Mrs. BARFIELD and her children. According to an 11 June 1861 appraisal of SLAUGHTER HILL's property, Mrs. BARFIELD was given:

Lot #95 (230 acres of land $2300.00
1 negro woman (Mary, age 28) $800.00
1 negro girl (Caroline, age 18) $1000.00
8 head of cattle $46.00
16 head of hogs $48.00
1 lot of farming tools $3.00

She apparently was a next door neighbor in the 1860 census and had at least 4 children from a previous marriage: WINNEY ANN, MARTHA, EDNA, and JOHN BARFIELD. On the 1852 Tax Digest, a Mr. ENOS BARFIELD is shown as owner of property listed as Lot #95, District #1, Macon Co., GA. The land was valued at $800.00 and the tax digest indicates he had 26 slaves. ENOS BARFIELD may have been ORRA BARFIELD'S husband, father, etc ???.

      4. Families in the Robeson Co, NC areas (Ashpole Swamp) are associated in land deals with SLAUGHTER HILL(1) and his immediate family. This is another possible fact, clue, conjecture that I hope will lead to connecting the HILL family lines.

Notes for S
ARAH E. WATERS:
SARAH WATERS HILL was born around 1839 somewhere in Georgia as stated on the 1860 census report. Her parent s were TRISTUM WATERS and M.A. DUNLAP WATERS. At the time of this writing nothing is known about her life before she married SLAUGHTER HILL.
Sarah and Slaughter Hill agreed in writing to a pre-marriage contract on 19 May 1860. The contract had Slaughter holding in trust by him, a sum of $10,000 of his money, for Sarah's sole use and promise of marriage . She and SLAUGHTER HILL were married on 21 May 1860, with the contract being filed on 30 May 1860 in Macon Co, GA.
There was one child from this marriage. JEFFERSON DAVIS HILL was born on 27 Apr 1861, just before Slaughter's death in May 1861. "Little Jeffie" died on 11 Sep 1863. A petition was filed on 28 Sep 1863 by his uncle WILLIAM W. HILL in Macon Co, GA, stating he had died.
Sarah is not mentioned by name in Slaughter's Will, but because of the pre-marriage agreement, Sarah received a marriage settlement of $10,404.43. It was paid to her by the executor of the Will, Slaughter's eldest son WILLIAM, on 22 December 1862.
On 23 May 1863, Sarah was named as the executor of the estate of a THOMAS HILL of Macon Co, GA. The relationship between THOMAS HILL and Sarah because of her marriage to SLAUGHTER HILL has yet to be established. This THOMAS HILL was born around 1821 in NC according to the 1850 census. He may have had some relationship to SLAUGHTER HILL who was born in 1802 and was also from North Carolina. It has been established to some degree that this THOMAS HILL was the son of a SLAUGHTER HILL(1), b:1744, who lived in Robeson Co, NC. Once again, because of the unique given name of SLAUGHTER HILL, I believe there is a connection here.
Sarah married a JOHN W. McKELLAR in 1865, a prominent doctor in the local community. She was to be his 4th wife. According to reference made in "The History of Macon Co", they had three children together. At some point the moved to Terrell Co, GA, some where around the Chickasawhatchee Village area. Sarah was the executor of Mr. McKellar's Will, dated 14 May 1878, when he died. The Will was recorded on 26 Feb 1879 in Terrell Co, GA.
SARAH E. McKELLAR married a Mr. JOHN H. SNIDER who was a farmer in the local area on 19 Oct 1882. Mr Snider, age 34, born in GA, was listed on the 1860 census as resideing in Terrell Co, GA along with a Frances M. Snider, age 31, probably his first wife. One of Sarah's children, a 4 year old named WILLIE, died 4 Sep 1879 by drowning in a well located on her property. Mr. Snider, age about 60, apparently committed suicide in March 1883. He was found dead in the woods on a Sunday morning with a pistol ball through his head. When found, he still held the pistol in his grip. He was last seen on the previous Wednesday in Chickasawhatchie where he taught school.
