Hinchea, a given name adapted from his maternal Henshaw line, was born in Bristol Parish, Sussex Co., VA in 1660, a time when the area was coming under the principles of John Locke's religious toleration in the colonies. Western expansion was growing in Virginia, with many small farmers pushing west to the eastern edge of the Piedmont. The result was a growing disparity between the interests of western farmers and the Tidewater occupants.
