Notes for CHARLES GILLIAM, SR.:
Charles Gilliam, Sr. (1706-1767)
[5G-Grandfather of Elizabeth Southard Hilles]

Various estate and indenture records show settlement of a line of Charles Gilliams in southeastern VA, specifically in the Sussex/Southampton county area. An indenture, dated 18 Jul 1760 [Sussex Co., VA Deed Book A, p.125], was signed by Charles Gilliam (1706-1767) granting his eldest son, Charles & heir-apparent (1759-1827) land in Albemarle Parish, Sussex Co. This "plantation tract" was situated on the south side of the Nottoway River in the counties of Sussex and Southampton and contained about 100 acres. This acreage was bounded by lands of Henry Harrison & Thomas Gilliam. Charles -- the provider -- was to be tenant for life, according to the will of his father, Hinchea (c.1675-1734). The transaction was witnessed by Miles Cary, Nicholas Massonburg, Richard Casher, & Benjamin Hunt.

The August Court [20 Aug 1767] of Sussex Co., VA authorized an inventory of Charles' estate. The Administrator was listed as Patty Gilliam, his widow. The signatees were Hinchea Gilliam [probably a cousin], John Dunn, & Ralph R. Maggee. [Deed Book B, p.134]

Charles (1706-1767, son of Hinchea) executed an indenture in 1760 in the Parish of Albemarle, Sussex Co. conveying land to his eldest son, Charles (1759-c.1827). This land was "south of the Nottoway River in the Counties of Sussex and Southampton, containing one hundred acres...Bounded by the Nottoway River, the lands of Henry Harrison, Thomas Gilliam, the said Charles Gilliam being Tenant for life in the said Land under the Will of his Father, Hinchea Gilliam deced...," [Sussex Co. Deed Book A, p.125]. [SEE MAP]
