AMES LEONARD SAMUEL DECATOR HILL:
Full name: James Leonard Samuel Decator Hill.

Following story given to me by Marcelle Hill Shubert.

On March 21, 1886, to the union of James Alexander and Martha Louise Hill was born a bouncing baby boy named James Leonard Samuel Decator Hill who we know as Rev Samuel D. Hill. He was one of seven brothers and one sister, all deceased except one brother Alex whose son most of you know, the Rev Paul Hill.
Sam was nurtured and grew into manhood within this family circle in and around Gastonia, North Carolina.
However, during his childhood he was never given the opportunity to attend public school. As soon as he was old enough he went to work in the cotton mills in his hometown. After working several years in the mills, Samuel was converted to the Christian belief in a tent meeting. Soon thereafter he felt the "call" into the ministry. But there was one great drawback; he could neither read nor write. So at the age of twenty-one, he entered the second grade at Central School, Central, South Carolina. He finished elementary school, high school and two years of college in nine years. While he was in college, he was taught by his first wife-to-be. During this time Samuel was joined in Holy Matrimony to Ethel Everline Harrell. Shortly after marriage he was assigned a pastorate at Old Fort, North Carolina, where their first child, Ruth Louise, was born. After serving this charge of several churches he was sent to be the pastor at Rockwood, Tennessee, where his first son and second child, James Pierce, was born. When completing his ministry at Rockwood, he was sent to Old Zion Church near Tabor City, North Carolina. While pastoring this charge, the Hills were blessed with their second baby boy whom you all well know as Albert Manning Hill. Rev Hill served this pastorate for three good years then was moved to a new pastorage, Spray Wesleyan Church, at Spray, North Carolina. During his pastorate at Spray Church, the Sam Hills had quite a surprise, a set of twin girls was born. Tragically, one died shortly after birth, the survivor being their daughter, Annie Laura.
Fourteen months of distressing illness ended the Hill's happy union with the passing of his lovely wife, Ethel. As a result of the loss of his companion, Rev Hill regretfully found it necessary to enter his four children in the Hephzibah Orphanage at Macon, Georgia, while serving a church at Rural Hall, North Carolina.
Being so valued as a former pastor, Sam was called back to serve the Spray Wesleyan Church. While serving his second pastorate at Spray, he met and married his second wife and companion, Verla. Verla, an understanding Christian woman, helped him provide a nourishing and loving home for his four motherless children.
He left his ministry here at Spray when he was recalled to Old Zion Church during the mid-1930's. In addition to Old Zion, during his remaining active years, he served Victory's Chapel at Snow Camp, North Carolina; Minnie's Chapel, Virginia; Vinton, Virginia; and Hickory Wesleyan Church, Hickory, North Carolina. Later, because of his age and hearing handicap, he was placed on the inactive list of pastors during which he has filled any pulpit that requests his ministry.
Throughout his ministry Rev Hill very successfully organized and built several churches which include Concord, North Carolina; Burlington, North Carolina; and Rockwood, Tennessee. Also, he held countless revival meetings from Georgia up through Pennsylvania.
Besides being blessed with good health, Sam Hill still has all four of his children living; Ruth Hill Boyte of Eden, North Carolina; Dr James Pierce Hill of Asheboro, North Carolina; Laura Hill Wood of Pickens, South Carolina; and Albert Manning Hill of Eden with whom Rev Hill resides.
