Edward Hill, 68, of 913 James Drive, Newport News, Virginia died Wednesday in a Newport News hospital following an extended illness. A native of Haywood County he had lived in Newport News 31 years and was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. He was a son of the late Sam and Rachel Hill and was an army veteran of WW II. He was a member of West Hampton Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife Lucille N. Hill, a son Mack E and a daughter Hazel Diane Stover both of Newport News, four brothers Nathan of Hampton, Virginia, Fletcher, Row and John of Waynesville and 5 grandchildren. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

From a book of Haywood County NC Service Men: Hill, Roe. T/Sgt. Age 28. Enlisted US Army Infantry 9-1-36. European Theatre. 3 Battle Stars. Purple Heart. Victory Ribbon. British Citation. Combat Infantry Badge. Attended Waynesville High School; Baptist Church. Husband of Mrs Roe Hill, Lee Street, Waynesville, NC.

Roe Hill, 68, of Rt 1, Waynesville, died Friday in a Haywood County Hospital. Hill, a native of Haywood County, was a son of the late Sam and Rachel Sutton Hill. He was a retired farmer and US Army veteran of WW II. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Ruff Hill; two daughters, Linda Buchanan and Mary Alice Sisk, both of Waynesville; a son Samuel Roe Hill of Waynesville; three brothers, Fletcher and John Hill of Waynesville and Nathan "Frog" Hill of Hampton, Va; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 2 PM Monday in the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home. The Revs Jack Robinson and John Swanger will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery with military rites by Waynesville American Legion and VFW. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Sunday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the residence. Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans or Haywood County Rescue Squad.

Services for William Anderson Hill, 85 of Dillsboro, who died Monday, will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, Sylva. The Rev John T. Bunn will officiate. Burial will be in the Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery. A native of Haywood County, he was a former resident of Salem, NJ. He was a veteran of WW I. Hill was a former deputy sheriff of Haywood County and a retired carpenter. Surviving are his wife Grace Messer Hill, 3 sons Charles William Messer of Alloway, NJ and Ronald A Hill and Harold Messer of Dillsboro, 3 daughters Janice Christopher of Salem, NJ and Jean Messer and Betty Prettyman of Pennsville, NJ, 2 brothers Johnny E and William "Little Bill" Hill of Waynesville, 25 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Effie Jane Rathbone Hill, wife of William Hill, age 36, died at 9:40 AM on Sunday at Haywood County Hospital. Services will be held at 3:30 Sunday. She is survived by the husband, 2 brothers William and Hardy Rathbone; one sister Mrs Hattie Ledford.

Mrs Lorena Hill Rathbone, 49, died at her home on Rt 1, Clyde at 5 AM Tuesday (March 19, 1957) after a long illness. She was a member of Panther Creek Baptist Church and was a native of Haywood County. Funeral services were held today at 2:30 PM in the Fines Creek Methodist Church. The Rev Doc Russell, Rev Charles Messer, Rev Alonzo Rathbone officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Ray Hannah, Billy Russell, Jimmy Rathbone, Milton Messer, Earl Bradley and JR Rathbone. Surviving are the husband Dewey Rathbone; 4 sons Johnny of Washington, DC and George, Mark, and Mathew of Rt 1 Clyde; 2 daughters Mrs Wilford Allen of Detroit, Mich and Mrs Carl Beasley of Rt 1 Clyde; 3 brothers William of Salem, NJ, Johnny of Rt 1 Clyde and Bill of Waynesville; 3 sisters Mrs Jack Robinson of Rt 1 Waynesville, Mrs Jim Haney of Monroeville, NJ and Mrs Verno Messer of Waynesville; father George Hill of Rt 1 Clyde; step mother Fannie Rathbone Hill of Rt 1 Clyde and 8 grandchildren.

Waynesville Newspaper: Bill Graham Hill, 76, of 625 Ratcliffe Cove Road, Waynesville, died Saturday, November 28, 1998. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late George and Fannie Rathbone Hill. He retired from AC Lawrence Leather Company with 22 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Irene Justice Hill; one daughter, Carolyn Seagraves of Waynesville; one son, Michael Hill of Waynesville; one brother, Johnny Hill of Waynesville; and three grandchildren. Private graveside services were held at Greenhill Cemetery

ONA MARIE HILL:
Waynesville Newspaper, March 24, 1958: Mrs Messer dies at 33 of gunshot wound. Mrs Lona Marie Hill Messer, 33, was shot fatally early Friday at her home here, the sheriff's department reported. Dr Jack Davis of Waynesville, acting Coroner, said the wound was self inflicted. Deputy Sheriff James Grasty said Mrs Messer had been in ill health. She was dead on arrival at Haywood County Hospital of a .38 caliber bullet wound in the head, he said. Grasty said the shooting occurred shortly after Mrs Messer's husband, Policeman Vernon Messer, returned home from the police department. He said after she opened the door for her husband, Mrs Messer went to the bedroom and shot herself. Messer was in the living room at the time, he said. Surviving are the husband, two daughters Judith Ann and Evelyn Jean of the home, a son Bill, of the home, three brothers William Hill of Salem, NJ, Johnny Lee Hill and Bill Hill, three sisters Mrs Jack Robinson, Mrs Odell Cagle, and Mrs James Haney of Monroeville, NJ, the parents Mr and Mrs George Hill. She was a member of the Panther Creek Church and had attended Fines Creek High School.
