He married HARRIETT H. QUEEN November 14, 1897 in Jackson Co., NC, daughter of JOHN QUEEN and MARGARET MORROW. She was born November 28, 1878 in Haywood Co., NC, and died March 22, 1970 in Haywood Co., NC.

Waynesville Newspaper, Feb 15, 1923, Balsam News: Mr Bill Smathers returned last week from a visit to Converse, SC. His father and mother, Mr and Mrs Scott Smathers, who have been visiting relatives in different parts of SC for some time, returned with him. Both of them had been very sick with influenza and are not well yet, though improving.

Funeral services were held on Sunday morning at the Red Bank Cemetery on the Balsam Road at 11:00 for William Alfred Smathers who died at 6:45 Thursday Evening in the Haywood County Hospital. The Rev Nando Stephens officiated. Serving as active pallberes were James L. Stringfield, Wade Frazier, Will A. Smathers, George Plott and Robert Welch of Waynesville and Charles Crawford of Sylva. Surviving are his widow, Harriett Queen Smathers, 2 sons John and Ernest Smathers both of Waynesville Rt. 1, one brother, George Smathers of Balsam, one sister, Rosa Miller of Luther, Buncombe County, and 4 grandchildren.

He married EMMA CRAWFORD February 08, 1899 in Jackson Co., NC, daughter of PHILLIP CRAWFORD and ADELAIDE CLAYTON. She was born May 24, 1878 in Jackson Co., NC, and died October 10, 1964 in Jackson Co., NC.

George E. Smathers died Friday (Jan 11, 1957). Burial was in Crawford Cemetery. He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. Surviving are his wife Mrs Emma Crawford Smathers, 4 daughters Mrs Joe Hoyle of Asheville, Mrs Betty Gunter of Waynesville, Mrs Johnny Woodall of Balsam, Mrs Dock Mehaffey of Hazelwood, 3 sons Walter of Balsam, Woodrow and Phillip Smathers of the home, a sister Mrs Rosa Miller of Candler.

Notes for EMMA CRAWFORD:
Services were held this afternoon for Mrs. Ammie Crawford Smathers, 86, who died Saturday (Oct 10, 1964) in a Sylva hospital. Burial was in Crawford Cemetery. Mrs. Smathers was a native of Jackson County, NC, and the daughter of the late Phillip and Adalle Clayton Crawford. Her husband, George E. Smathers, died in 1957. Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs. Dock I. Mehaffey of Hazelwood, Mrs. Arthur Gunter of Balsam and Mrs. Joe Hoyle of Asheville. 2 sons, Woodrow and Phillip Smathers of Balsam, 21 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

She married THOMAS G. NORMAN. He was born April 10, 1879, and died October 27, 1927.

Marriage License: W.R. Jones, 21, son of Frank and Emma Jones of Jackson County, both living, and Sarah Smathers, 18, daughter of Scott and Sarah Smathers, both living, of Jackson County, January 9, 1902. This marriage never took place. Marriage license returned unexecuted March 22, 1902.

Sarah L. Smathers, born in September 1885, would have been 16 in 1901 and 17 in 1902. I don't know if age was the reason these marriages never took place.
