Mrs Nora Smathers Brooks, 92, of Balsam, died this morning in the Haywood County Hospital after a short illness. A native of Haywood County she was a daughter of the late Mark and Ellen Drennin Smathers. Her husband, Phil A. Brooks, died in May 1967. She was a member of Balsam Baptist Church. Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs Florence Coward of Balsam, Mrs Fred Farmer and Mrs Glen Rogers of Waynesville, 3 sons Elmer Brooks of Davidsonville, MD, Ernest Brooks of Lenoir and Eugene Brooks of Waynesville, a sister, Mrs Robert Crawford of Balsam, a brother Ed Smathers of Monroe, Wash, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. Services will be held Sunday at 3 PM in the Balsam Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons Terry and Jerry Pressley, Tommy Brooks, Harold Rogers, Dennis Early and Harold Arrington.

Mrs Laura Smathers Arrington, 83, of Rt. 1, died Saturday morning in a local resthome after a long illness. She was a native of Haywood County, a member of Balsam Baptist Church and a daughter of the late Mark and Ellen Drennon Smathers. Surving are a daughter, Mrs Kenneth Forga of Washington, 3 sons, Dewey of Waynesville, Fred of Enka and Hugh Arrington of Newport News, VA, 2 sisters, Mrs Nora Brooks and Mrs Bertha Crawford of Balsam, a brother, Ed Smathers of Monroe, Washington, 17 grandchildren. Services were held at 2 PM in Red Bank Baptist Church. Burial was in Red Bank Cemetery. Pallbearers were Eugene Brooks, Herman and Frank Arrington, Billy, Carl and Frank Crawford.

The Waynesville Newspaper, January 22, 1922: Balsam News, Mrs Dan Arrington of Hazelwood is visiting her mother, Mrs ML Smathers, who is quite sick.

Mrs Minnie Smathers Arrington, 79, of Balsam, died at 2:20 PM Friday at the home of her daughter Mrs Ila Bowen after a long illness. She was a native of Jackson County and the dauaghter of the late Mark and Ellen Drennon Smathers. Her husband, Dan Arrington died March 7, 1955. Survivors include 3 other daughters, Mrs Edith McElroy of Spokane, Wash, Mrs Eva Hall of Waynesville and Mrs Bonnie Vinson of Chicago, 3 sons, Herman of Waynesville, Dan of Raleigh and Frank of Balsam, 3 sisters, Mrs Nora Brooks of Balsam, Mrs Laura Arrington of Waynesville and Mrs Bertha Crawford of Sylva, a brother Ed Smathers of Monroe, Wash, 34 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren. Services were held Sunday in Balsam Baptist Church of which she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were James Hall, Charlie Sparks, Vaughn Rhinehart, Jr., Eugene Brooks, George Mehaffey, Charlie Derrick, Charles Norman and Carl Coward.

From Haywood County Heritage Book, page 113: Dan and Minnie married around 1902 and they had eight children (4 boys and 4 girls). Grandfather Dan was a farmer and a logger who packed up his family and moved from Fontana to South Mountain, which is south of Morganton. In South Mountain, grandmother helped out by running a boarding house. Grandmother always planted two huge gardens and canned to give to her children. In the winter she pieced quilts to give away and sell. My Grandpa was an expert marksman and went to all of the shooting matches at Cattaloochee. He often won first place. They nicknamed him Dan Boone. He was written about in Ford Magazine and Reader's Digest. He owned a muzzle rifle for shooting matches. The name of the rifle was Old Eli. In 1947 he won first prize when he was 72 years old. Before he passed away, he gave the rifle to my mother, as he said he had four sons and only one gun. My sister still has the gun. Waynesville Newspaper, Nov 5, 1925, Balsam News: Born to Mr and Mrs Ed Smathers, Oct 26th, a daughter.

Story told to me by Elsie Smathers: During a supper at the Balsam School, near site of present day Balsam Baptist Church and Cemetery, Claude Green, Deputy Sheriff of Jackson County, was shot and killed. Several witnesses stated that Ed Smathers was the person who killed Green. The largest man hunt of the time was undertaken to locate and arrest Ed. For whatever reason, Ed went into hiding. All local law enforcement agencies, along with the National Guard, were involved in the man hunt. The murder and ensuing man hunt received such publicity that a reporter for a popular detective magazine of the time came and published a story about the "Murder of the Balsam Mountains". The story, according to Aunt Elsie, contained numerous inaccuracies and falsehoods. The story told how Ed would hide out until the men of the community went to work then would enter different houses and, at gun point, force the women to prepare food, etc for him. Elsie said this was not true because Ed was so well known and liked in the community that any household would have invited him to eat. Ed was hiding in the house, or on the premesis of Parris Swanger when someone (informer) told the police where he was. Ed was arrested and subsequently sent to prison. Ed did not stay in prison very long before he was back home. Elsie remembers reading a letter, at the home of Fred Norman (son of Sarah Smathers and Thomas Norman), from Ed to his cousin George E. Smathers which stated "if you don't get me out of here I'm coming with the truth". Most members of the community, according to Elsie, thought that George, and not Ed, was the actual killer of Claude Green. At one point in the search for Ed he was at the home of George and Emma Smathers when the police came looking for him. Emma and Elsie Smathers dressed Ed in women's clothes and walked away undetected!

Another incident involving Ed Smathers was the story that he did shoot and kill a Collins man who had been "running around" with Cora. One day, at work at a saw mill, near the "old Reiger place" (Haywood side of Balsam), Ed called for Collins' attention. When Collins came near, Ed shot him in the head, killing him. Ed received no punishment for this act.

Some years later, Ed followed his daughter, Mae and son-in-law, Lloyd Arrington, to Monroe, Washington, where there were many Haywood/Jackson County, NC, families living. Parris Swanger and his wife, Amy, were living there. Parris had always been a good friend of Ed's. After Parris Swanger died, Ed married his widow, Amy Hoyle Swanger. She was the daughter of George and Lillie Hoyle and sister of Joe Hoyle, husband of Emma Marie Smathers.

Notes for CORA CRAWFORD:
Cora was killed 28 June 1936 from head injuries received when thrown from the back of a pick-up truck driven by her brother-in-law, Joe Hoyle. The accident occurred on Balsam Road in the Saunook Community in front of the present day site of the home of Sam and Betty Jean Burgess Smathers. At the time of the accident the site was occupied by Granny Burgess' Store. Cora's body was found near (or inside) Granny Burgess' Store. The information on Cora's death certificate was given by Lloyd Arrington, her son-in-law, and indicated that she and Ed were divorced at the time of her death, eventhough the newspaper article of the accident referred to her as Mrs Ed Smathers. The death certificate also stated that her parents were Emma Crawford and Mack McKay. George Smathers did, however, raise her as his own daughter.

Notes for ALDEN SMATHERS:
Sixteen year old Alden was part of a group walking from church on a Saturday night when a car driven by ________ Scruggs ran into the group on the Old Balsam Road near present site of Bill Trull's house. Alden Smathers and Ransom Bryson were killed and several others received serious injuries. Evelyn Derrick (Arrington) almost lost a leg. Joint funeral services were held for Alden and Ransom at Red Bank Cemetery. No charges were filed against Scruggs. It was proved that his headlights did not shine enough for him to have seen the group before running into them.

She married AUGUSTUS CHASTAIN "TEEN" CRAWFORD February 15, 1914, son of GEORGE CRAWFORD and SARAH PANNEL. He was born May 29, 1894, and died March 14, 1975.

The Waynesville Newspaper, February 16, 1922: Balsam News, The little six months old baby boy of Mr and Mrs A.C. Crawford died Monday night.

Florence's death certificate states 28 April 1895 as her birth date and 10 May 1924 as her death date. Her tombstone, however, lists 9 August 1880 to 6 May 1954. I have no explanation!

Notes for MARY JANE CRAWFORD:
Mary Jane Crawford's death certificate, which was completed by Mid-wife Mrs. H.M. Parker, stated that Mary Jane lived about 10 minutes and died as a result of influenza. Florence must have had a terrible case of the flu, which when coupled with the birth and death of Mary Jane, contributed to the death of Florence the next day, 10 May 1924. Mary Jane was buried on 10 May 1924 then Florence was buried on 12 May 1924.
