DLEA WALTER HYATT:
Mr. A. Walter Hyatt died January 13, 1964, at age 71, in his home after a long illness. He was a mine operator and retired Southern Rail Road Engineer. He and Mr. S.J. Mulvaney were the original operators of the Olivene Mining Company at Balsam. He moved to Buncombe County in 1918 and retired from Southern Rail Road in 1959. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Jackson County, NC, a daughter of the late Elijah and Julia Foster Smathers and a retired employee of the Wellco Shoe Company. Surviving are the husband, Lowery Gunter; 5 daughters, Pauline and Irene Gunter of the home, Mrs. Paul Gaddis of Waynesville, Mrs. James Hawkins of Clyde and Mrs. Robert Vicarinia of Baltimore, MD. 5 sons; Clyde and Floyd of Charlotte, Robert, Hughey and Coy Gunter of Waynesville. A sister, Mrs. Rufus Arrington of Waynesville, a half sister, Mrs. Edna Futrell of Toledo, Ohio. 2 brothers, Oscar and Rufus Smathers of Waynesville, 14 grandchildren. Services were held Sunday in the Allen's Creek Baptist Church. Burial was in Crawford Cemetery. Pallbearers were Guy and Roy Arrington, Gordon, Willard, Kenneth and Doug Smathers.

Waynesville Newspaper, Jan 18, 1923, Balsam News: Mr Rufus Smathers, who had his ankle badly crushed last week while cutting timber near Sugar Loaf, is doing as well as could be expected.


William Rufus Smathers, 84, of the Walker-in-the-Hills development died Thursday in a Haywood County Hospital after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Elisha and Julia Foster Smathers and the husband of Inez Derrick Smathers, who died in 1977. He was a member of Balsam Baptist Church and he attended Red Bank Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are three sons, Gordon, Kenneth and Bud Smathers, all of Waynesville; eight daughters, Catherine Lewis, Dot Clark and Mildred Medford, all of Waynesville, Bessie Wood of Miami, Florida, Phyllis Roper of Atlanta, Georgia, Pat Nix of Canton, Marjorie Sorrells of Candler and Judy Smathers of the home; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday in the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home. The Revs. Charles Shuler, Bennett Walker and Carl Chastain will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 9 PM Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

She was a daughter of the late William T. and Emma Smathers Derrick and was a member of Balsam Baptist Church. Surviving are the husband, William Rufus Smathers, 8 daughters, Mrs. Carene Lewis, Mrs. Dorothy Clark, Mrs. Mildred Medford and Miss Judy Smathers of Waynesville, Mrs. Phyllis Roper of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Bessie Wood of Miami, Florida, Mrs. Pat Nix of Canton and Mrs. Margie Sorrells of Candler; 3 sons, Gordon, Kenneth and Bud Smathers of Waynesville, brother Newman Derrick of Balsam, 4 sisters, Mrs. Mary Buchanan of Lowell, S.C., Mrs. Evelyn Arrington of Palmetto, Georgia, Mrs. Nellie Crawford of Sylva and Mrs. Harriett Rhinehart of Waynesville, 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
