Batesville Debating Society, membership list before and after Civil War included HP Brookshire.

HP Brookshire (Camp Lee, VA) carried a Belgium rifle and killed a sharpshooter.

HP Brookshire PVT, Co K, 24th GA, promoted to 3rd Sgt 1863. Lost leg at Gettysburg. Died 1907.

Humphrey P. Brookshire, Private, May 7, 1862, appointed 3d Sergeant May 22, 1863. Wounded in leg, necessitating amputation. Captured at Gettysburg, PA, July 3, 1863. Paroled at US Army General Hospital, West's Building, Baltimore, MD, Sep 25, 1863. Received at City Point, Virginia Sep 27, 1863. Admitted to General Hospital #9, Richmond, Virginia Sept 28 1863. Transferred to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, Sept 29, 1863.

She married JAMES EVERETT DERRICK November 16, 1856 in Rabun Co., GA, son of JOHN DERRICK and PATSY WATTS. He was born March 02, 1831 in Rabun Co., GA, and died January 05, 1907 in Rabun Co., GA.

Information contained within the Indigent Widows of Confederate Soldiers application completed by Honor Ann Derrick on September 27, 1907: She was born in 1838 in Haywood County, NC and had lived in Clayton, Rabun County, GA since 1838. Her husband James Everett Derrick was born in 1832 in Rabun County, GA and they were married Nov 16, 1856. That her husband died January, 1907, in Clayton, Rabun County, GA. That she is filing the application because of Age and Poverty; and Infirmity and Poverty. That she is afflicted with general rheumatism, broken down generaly and am feebled by age to the extent I am unable to earn support. With her application was a copy of her marriage document which states that James E. Derrick and Honar A. Brooksher were married on November 16, 1856.

From 1901 to 1906 approved for Civil War pension of $50.00 per year due to desease of March 1865. Served with Co. G., 1st SC.

Invalid Soldier's Pension Application, January 15, 1900 by James E. Derrick:
On oath states that he was born March 2, 1831 and that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of Georgia and has been continuously since March 2, 1831 and that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States on March 1, 1863 during the war between the States and served in Company G of the 1st Regiment of South Carolina Artillery, Hardee's Brigade and was honorably discharged on the 9th day of April, 1865, and that while engaged in such military service, and in line of duty in the State of South Carolina on or about the 10th day of March 1865 he was disabled or wounded as follows: While in line of duty as a Confederate Soldier at Charleston, SC, on or about said 10th day of March 1865, on account of severe exposure of service applicant contracted blood poision and also severe rhumatism of legs, arms and shoulders which said blood poision and rheumatism gradually grew worse until close of service and remained to gradually grow worse until the same has disabled me in such a manner that I am wholly and permanently practically incompotent to perform the ordinary manual vocations of life. Applicant futher swears that he has been continuously treated for said diseases every since the same was contracted on said March 10th 1865. Applicant further swears that the reason he has not heretofore made an application for pension is because he has had property sufficient to support himself until the last two years which said property is now exhausted and he now makes this application as a matter of necessity in as much as its justice.

This application was initially denied because the pension officer ruled that blood poisioning was not a disease and that if he truely had blood poisioning he could not have lived the 35 years since the end of the war. The application was later reviewed and approved on February 5, 1900.

To substantiate the application James Everett Derrick received the required affidavit of three witnesses: John G. Welborn, F.M. Massengill, and N.K. Stubblefield who all state they were with him in the army and have known him ever since.

In his 1901, 1902 and 1903 annual applications he stated substantially the same except "applicant contracted chronic ulcers on the left leg also breast trouble which renders him very short of breath on exertion all of which renders applicant permanently disabled"

On the 1904 application he stated: "Contracted bone scrofula in left leg rendering applicant unable to perform the ordinary vocation of life".

On the 1905 application he stated: "Contracted an ulcer on left leg from having been esposed to the mud and water while in service which disease still exists".

1906 application he states: "While in service in the state of South Carolina applicant contracted bone scurvy in left leg which disease is permanent and still exists which renders applicant permanently disabled to perform labor".

For the 1907 application was completed on January 2, 1907. James Everett was in such poor health that he could only sign with an "X". He died three days later on January 5, 1907. His application for his $50.00 per year was processed and paid on February 13, 1907.

JE Derrick was witness to widow's pension of Dicy Stubblefield, widow of William Stubblefield, who served in Co. G., 1st SC. "killed at Fort Johnson July 1864"

JE Derrick was witness to widow's pension of Theresia Kerby, widow of Isaac Kerby, Co. K., 1st SC., "hospital fever June 8, 1863, died in Charleston, SC."

JE Derrick witness to indigent soldiers pension application for ? Massengale who enlisted Co. M., 1st SC May 1862. Captured near Goldsboro, NC. Carried to Harts Island prison and kept till after Lee surrendered.

Mountaineer Newspaper, Jan 29, 1942: Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon at Greenhill Cemetery for Mrs Mary Ellen Peacock, 82, who died at the Haywood County Hospital at 12:40 Saturday morning. The Rev Nando Stephens officiated. Mrs Peacock was a native of Clayton, GA but had resided here for many years. She is the widow of the late Nelson Peacock, who was engaged in the lumber business here for several years. Mrs Peacock had been ill for sometime. She is survived by two brothers, William Derrick of Balsam and Webster Derrick of Clayton, Georgia.
