William Terrell Derick, 86, resident of Balsam, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs Thomas Rhinehart, in Hazelwood, shortly after 3 o'clock Monday morning following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church with the Rev N.L. Stephens officiating. Burial will be in Red Bank Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and are: Eugene Smathers, Gordon Smathers, Lloyd Derrick, Charlie Derrick, Don Smathers and Jack Crawford. The body will be taken to the home of Mrs Rhinehart at 10:30 AM today. Mr Derrick was a native of Clayton, Georgia but spent most of his life at Balsam. His wife, Mrs Emma Smathers Derrick, died in 1926. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs Rufus Smathers, Mrs Frank Smathers, Mrs Paul Arrington, all of Rt 1 Waynesville, Mrs Gola Buchanan of Gastonia, Mrs A.C. Crawford of Balsam and Mrs Rhinehart of Hazelwood.

Waynesville Newspaper, Dec 9, 1926, Balsam News: Mrs WT Derrick, one of our best citizens, passed away at her home here about 9 o'clock Saturday night. She had been in bad health for several years and was a patient in the Angel Hospital in Franklin for a short while recently, but to no avail. She is survived by her husband, three married daughters and two single sons and one son who is married, also her father and mother, Mr and Mrs Scott Smathers, three sisters and two brothers, all of whom were here to attend the last rites. The funeral services were conducted in the home by Rev Frank Arrington and interment took place in the Plott Cemetery near Saunook Monday afternoon. Mrs JN Peacock, sister-in-law, from Waynesville attended the funeral as well as Mr Webster Derrick, brother-in-law, of Clayton, Ga.

Services for Mary Derrick Buchanan, 86, of Gastonia, formerly of Sylva, were held at 1 PM today in East Fork Baptist Church in Sylva. She died Wednesday (May 25, 1988). The Rev Ben Cabe and the Rev Russell Walker officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. A native of Haywood County, Mrs Buchanan was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Smathers Derrick. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Clyde Franklin Buchanan of Springwood; three daughters, Velma Bishop of Lowell, Zelda Lanham of Springwood and Nellie Price of Mount Holly; and three sisters, Nellie Crawford of Canton, Harriett Rhinehart of Waynesville and Evelyn Arrington of Palmetto, Ga. Carothers Funeral Home, Belmont was in charge of arrangements.

From a Buchanan Family History: Gola and Mary Buchanan reared their family on East Fork (Jackson Co., NC) near the old Buck and Hester Buchanan home. Gola, a bass singer and NC Highway Department employee, was known earlier as the "construction designer" of the Dry Flume, a counter-part to John Deitz' Wet Flume which originated in the Roaring Hole Laurel country at the extreme head of the creek. Gola's Dry Flume, which was gravity operated, descended rapidly from the great heights of the north side of the Painter Knob. Both flumes were used to chute acid (chestnut) wood. Gola died in 1951, is buried in East Fork Cemetery. Mary and the children, who know live near Lowell, NC, return annually to East Fork Cemetery on decoration day, in the month of June.

Clayton Tribune, Dec 1, 1949: Mr James Webster Derrick, 80, died last Tuesday at the Stephens County Hospital after a long illness. He was born September 11, 1869, the son of Mr and Mrs Everett Derrick. Mr Derrick was a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of the county. He attended Rabun County schools and Young-Harris College. He spent most of his life in construction work and a great many of the business houses and residences of Clayton were built by him. He was married to Miss Bettie Alene Hengar of Saltville, Va, who preceded him in death 10 years ago. He was a devout member of the Methodist Church of Clayton which his parents helped to establish. He is survived by daughter Mrs MA Khoury of Evanston, Illinois; sons, Gladstone of Clayton and Andrew of Rome. RE Cannon Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
