10. GEORGIA ANN4 SATTERFIELD (JOHN3, JAMES2, ROBERT1) was born August 24, 1857 in Union Co., GA, and died November 19, 1941 in Haywood Co., NC. She married IVEN SMITH "DUTCH" SMATHERS, son of GEORGE SMATHERS and MALINDA SELF. He was born May 09, 1861 in Union Co., GA, and died June 13, 1948 in Haywood Co., NC.

EORGIA ANN SATTERFIELD:
The Mountaineer Newspaper, November 10, 1932: Friends regret to hear of the illness of Mrs. G.A. Smathers. It is hoped that she will soon be well again.


Last rites were conducted at 10'oclock Friday morning at the Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church for Mrs. Georgia Ann Satterfield Smathers who died at 2:45 Wednesday (November 26, 1941) afternoon at her home at Balsam. The Rev. Lush Rogers and Rev. Ben Cook officiated. Burial was in the Red Bank Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons as follows: Alvin Arrington, Perry Smathers, Roy Stephens, Ratio Arrington, Bonner Rabb and Claude Smathers. Mrs. Smathers was a native of Union County, Georgia and was born on August 24, 1857. She had lived the greater part of her life in Haywood County. Surviving are the following; husband, Iven Smith Smathers; three sons Will and Frank Smathers of Waynesville and Charlie Smathers of Boone, daughters Mrs. E.L. Arrington, Mrs. Nando L. Stephens and Mrs. Rabb, all of Waynesville, twenty one grandchildren and thirty two great grandchildren.

Mountaineer Newspaper, Tuesday, June 15, 1948, front page story with picature: Iven Smith Smathers, 87, retired farmer of the Saunook section died at the home of a son, Charlie Smathers, early Sunday morning after an extended illness. The funeral service was held on yesterday afternoon (Monday, June 14, 1948) at the Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church with the Reverend J.M. Woodard and Reverend Lush Rogers officiating. Internment was in Red Bank Cemetery. Pallbearers were the following grandsons: Claude, Don and Perry Smathers, Bill Stephens, Jack Rabb and Ratio Arrington. Granddaughers served as flower bearers. Mr. Smathers, who was known to his many friends as "Uncle Dutch" was born May 9, 1861 in Blairsville, Georgia and moved to Haywood County at the age of 21. He was the oldest member of the Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church and one of the most active ones, having served on the board of deacons for many years. He was active in every community betterment program in schools and the church and was loved and honored by all who knew him. He is survived by three daughters Mrs. Rhoda Arrington, Mrs. Nando Stephens and Mrs. C.L. Rabb of Waynesville, three sons W.A., Charlie and Frank Smathers all of Waynesville, 25 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

ARRINGTON December 16, 1888 in Haywood Co., NC, son of ELBERT ARRINGTON and ELIZABETH GILLILAND. He was born May 23, 1869 in Haywood Co., NC, and died March 02, 1920 in Haywood Co., NC.

Mountaineer Newspaper, June 15, 1922, Saunook News: Mrs Rachel Arrington and daughter, Elizabeth, were the quests of Mrs Annie Lyle, Sunday.

Waynesville Newspaper, Jun 18, 1923, Balsam News: Mrs Rachel Arrington and daughter Elizabeth were visiting Mrs Eli Arrington of Sunburst Sunday. Mrs Arrington is on an extended visit to her father, AH Arrington.

Last rites were held on Wednesday (September 13, 1939) afternoon at 3:00 P.M. at the Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church for Mrs. Rachel Satterfield Arrington, widow of the late William Arrington, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Claude Hill, in the Saunook section on Tuesday at 8:30 P.M.. The pastor of the church, the Rev. Ben Cook officiated. Burial was in Red Bank Cemetery. Pallbearers were Herbert Stephens, Robert Arrington, Lester Eavenson, George Rickman, Albert Arrington and Howard Moore. Mrs. Arrington was born on October 29th, 1859 in Union County, Georgia. She had been a member of the Baptist church at Balsam since her early childhood. Surviving are one son Paul Arrington of Saunook; three daughters, Mrs. Claude Hill, Mrs. H.H. Eavenson and Mrs. M.M. Rickman all of Saunook; one brother, John Satterfield of Blairsville, Georgia, one sister, Mrs. Iven Smith Smathers of Saunook and thirty one grandchildren.
