Waynesville Mountaineer, Mar 3, 1932, Saunook News: Helen, the small daughter of Mr and Mrs Floyd Lyle, received an injury to her hand last week when it was caught in a door at the school house. The injury, though painful, is not serious and Helen is expected to return to school soon.

Bobby Louis McCracken, 43, of Balsam, died Wednesday, January 28, 1981, in a Jackson County Hospital after an extended illness. He was the son of Francis Smathers McCracken of Balsam and the late Carl McCracken, Sr. He was retired from Enka. Survived by Wife Kathleen James McCracken, son Gregory L. McCracken of the home, daughter Greta Ellen McCracken of the home and two brothers, Carl McCracken, Jr. of Waynesville and Alden McCracken of Clemson, South Carolina. Burial was in the Jones Family Cemetery in Jackson County.

Johnny McClure, son of a former Waynesville couple, died from burns late Thursday when an oil stove exploded in the Vancouver, Washington home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill McClure. The home was completely destroyed. The McClures lived in Waynesville, Rt. 1, until last March when the family moved to Vancouver. Details of the fire have not been learned yet. Funeral services for the child will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at the Red Bank Baptist Church. The Revs O.J. Beck, J.W. Woodard and Walter Bryson will officiate and burial will be in Red Bank Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tommy Sparks, Harry Lee Hawkins, Billy Moore and Tommy Hooper. The body will arrive from Washington at 11 AM Tuesday and will be taken to the home of the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Arrington at Red Bank. Surviving, in addition to the parents and the maternal grandparents are brothers Gary and Eddie McClure and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed McClure of Rt. 1, Waynesville.

I, along with my brother Stanley Hill and sister Shirley Hill were also in the house at the time of the fire. The house filled with smoke very quickly. I, at the age of 7, was the oldest child in the house. We all ran from the house as fast as we could but Johnny was in a back bedroom and unable to get out. He was found, huddled under his bed, dead from smoke inhalation. The local newspapers gave me credit for saving Shirley but Stanley, as he came through the kitchen of the house, grabbed 3 1/2 year old Shirley by the arm and led her from the house.
