2-14-1978: John Wendell Himes went to the Hospital, suffering from cancer and emphazema.
3-31-1978, Dottie and John Himes Jr, (his son and wife), were living in Graham, TX. His other Son Steve was living in Columbus, OH. Wendell had emphazema and cancer and needed care. He was in the hospital and needed to go to a Nursing home close to his children. His other son Steve living in Columbus, OH could not take over the responsibility for his Dad, so John and Dottie drove 19 hours all night long from Graham, TX to Dayton, Oh to pick up his Dad as he could not fly to TX because of his emphazema. We got there about noon, slept a few hours, visited a short time with Dottie's mother, Mary Elizabeth Porter at 405 Redwood, Dayton, OH. About 6 pm, we went to the Nursing Home to pick up his Dad as he had to be moved during the night when it was cool. Wendell sat up the first few hours, and later laid down in the back of our stationwagon as we had a mattress in there for him. We drove all night long straight through to Graham, TX. After arriving in Graham, TX, Sunday morning, we took him to the pre-arranged Nursing home so they could properly take care of him. About the time, we drove up, our daughters were heading to church and saw us and came over to tell Grandpa hello. One of the Administrators that worked there was a good friend of ours that worked there, Neda Thompson, and she took especially good care of him. We visited him every day, but some days, he didn't even know us. We had our Dr. check him and he said the drive did not hurt him and was okay. Six days later, he got up and sat in the chair, began coughing and his lung collapsed and he died. He only had one lung left due to the cancer and smoking. We then turned around and went back to Dayton, Ohio for his funeral. The funeral services were held at Tobias Funeral Home in Belmont, Dayton, OH. and he was buried at David Cemetery, Kettering, OH.
