See pg. 738, Biographical Sketches, Re Martin Himes 2-4-5 Grain dealer, Covington, OH. Among the important business enterprises of Covington is the grain warehouse operated by the firm of Shuman and Himes of which Mr. Martin Himes is the active man; 1823 he was born in Montgomery Co, OH, a "Buckeye" by birth 1848 he removed to Green Co. 1865 he moved to Miami Co, Covington, OH. He first purchased a farm about one mile east of Covington, OH where he resided, being occupied in farming until 1873, when he came to Covington and engaged in grain buying in connection with J. R. Shuman, whose biography also appears in this work; their business has gradually increased and is now quite extensive; they have lately erected a large crib and fitted it with the necessary machinery for shelling, cleaning and handling corn; they are also handling a large quantity of tobacco, besides their usual quantity of grain.
1846 Mr. Himes was married to Miss Anna Vancleave, also of Montgomery Co.. Her father was nephew of John Van Cleave (Old Johnny), as he was called), who laid out the city of Dayton. Mr. Himes has two children living, Robert W, Assistant Superintendent and teacher in the Covington School, and Charles M. a Railroad Agent and dealer in agricultural implements, Covington, OH. Montgomery County, OH info on internet that Dottie Porter Himes printed off 2-12-2000 shows a Martin that 1823 was born son of Samuel, book 501, page 076 1846 married a Anna VanCleve, no page, in MT county also a Martin, on fc 1880 census page 178B Newberry Twp, Mi County and a Martin who died 1897 cem record page 0104a Mi County??
3/23/2001 Dottie Himes found on the Internet at familytreemaker.genealogy.com/uses/k/a/p/Robert-E-Kapp/etc. No. 144 -the family of Anna VanCleve who married Martin Himes on November 26, 1856 in Montgomery Co., OH and had two children listed: 1. Robert Himes b. abt 1847 Montgomery Co. OH 2. John Himes b. about 1849 prob. Montgomery Co. OH* (Dottie did not have this John Himes listed before this info so added).
9-9-2001 SpiWebb from Montgomery Co. OH SpiWebb@aol.com sent Dottie Himes a list of marriages for Montgomery Co. OH with the Himes surname up to 1850. There was one for Martin Himes that married Anna VanCleve. We can get a copy of marriage license for $7 or just the dates for $2.00
