3-30-2001 Edgar Herrman sent to Dottie & John Himes-- 12 pages-- "CATOCTIN VALLEY, MD to MIAMI VALLEY, OH about JACOB SHROYER (1170-1862) AND JOHN SHROYER (1794-1895) which stated
Page 8, Paragraph 3, After arriving in Dayton,John Shroyer spent time looking for the Southard family, but before finding them he met the Worman family. David Worman with his new ife came from Frederick, MD in 1806. Immediately a friendship developed as they had common subjects to discuss. Thee was another cause for interest, Elizabeth Shonk, the stepdaughter of David Worman. in 1817 John Shroyer married Elizabeth Shonk.
Page 10, Paragraph 3, John Shroyer at one time owned over 600 acres of Oakwood and near Oakwood property. Most of the farm property was central Oakwood along with an additional acreage just adjacent to the east of Oakwood. In 1834, John and Elizabeth built a new larger home on his new farmland. Earlier, he and his brother Jacob Shroyer kept their promise and returned to Maryland to bring their father Jacob Shroyer b. 1745 to Ohio. The father greatly enjoyed the trip, the new country, and the success of his sons. Jacob Sr. lived with John and his family until his death in 1838. JACOB SHROYER SR. was the first Shroyer ever buried in the Old David's Cemetery.
Page 4, Paragraph 2, 1810, The Shroyer boys, Jake (Jacob) and John were on a wagon headed to Ohio country. There were a few tools, some food, and a rifle for shooting game, two good horses and a small sum of money from their savings, and their father's nest egg. As their father, Jacob Sr., handed the to Jacob the money he said, "Use this to buy more land". John's dog wanted to go along but their brothers kept him tied by the barn. Nevertheless, at their first campground int he foothills, his dog showed up.
Their travels would take them to Hagerstown, then to Cumberland, on to Uniontown, then Red Stone (near Brownsville) next to Washington, PA and Wheeling, West Virginia. From there they would enter Ohio country and find their goal in Montgomery County, OH. (read the full explanation of their grueling trip in this history written by Edgar Herrman in the Shroyer Binder)
Page 10, Paragraph 6: As John's (Shroyer) grew older he found pleasure in assisting his children:
1) David b. 1819, d. 1892
2) Jacob b. 1819 (Twins?) d. 1895
3) Mary E. b. 1821, d. 1864
4) Harriet b. 1823, d. 1896
5) Levi b. 1825, and d. ?
6) Andrew b. 1830. d. 1911
1)David Shroyer inherited the farm east of the present Shroyer Road-232 acres. He owned all the land east of the present Shroyer Road and south of East Dr. (Presently Dorothy Lane) to near Wilmington Pike in Beavertown--246 acres.
2)Jacob--
3) John Himes, the husband of the deceased Daughter, Mary (Shroyer) Himes (d1864) was given 115 acres in trust for their eight children.
4)Harriet (Shroyer) Long received 115 acres, mostly in the central farm area
5)Levi Shroyer: In John Shroyer's will, (he died 1876) it is mentined that LEVI SHROYER inherits 200 acres in Shelby County (from record of the will) . There is no mention of how or when John acquired this property. This was possibly the farm that brother Jacob had bought years earlier. In the Biographical History of Shelby Co. OH, 1892 there is mentioned that in Jackson Township that Levi owns and cultivates 279 acres of which he had cleared 125 acres through his own efforts. Levi might have been asked by his father to take charge of the farm. It is possible that Jacob's wife and child never joined him in OH and that he came too ill to work the farm and deeded it to John before his death in 1862.
6)Andrew received 80 acres, which he sold to Harriet.
