From "Hinton and Related Family History".Second Edition, Volume One.Copyright 1971 by the Hinton Family Association."Thomas Hinton, of Hynton, the son of John (name spelled both ways), who was born at Stainswick (Staveewyke), was a man of considerable wealth and power. As the Hyntons of the past he had a large list of properties.'He eventually became the largest owner of land in Berkshire, paying taxes on over 4,000 acres'.He purchased from Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, July 7, 1541, the manor of 'Earlscote' in the parish of Wanborough, containing over 600 acres.Under his father's will he inherited the manor of 'Over-Bournton'.Also, his wife's father, John (Goddard), willed many valuable possessions to his already large estate. He was knighted early in life and was appointed to many high offices."He had a son Anthony.

Also, LDS Batch #8387309, Serial Sheet #31, lists Anthony's wife as Martha Giles (not Warnford), with births of children:Martha, Thomas, Robert, William, Edward & Dorthy (? From "Hinton and Related Family History".Second Edition, Volume One.Copyright 1971 by the Hinton Family Association."Anthony Hinton, of 'Earlscote, the son of Thomas Hinton and Anne (Ann) Goddard, inherited the manor of 'Earlscote'.Anthony was Justice of Peace of Berkshire.Anthony married late in his life to a young girl, Martha Warnford, the daughter of John. They had a large family. He died and was buried in St. Johns Church, Wanborough, Wiltshire. His grandson, Sir Anthony, erected a monument (in the south aisle of St. Johns' Church, Wanborough, County Wilts, London, England) in his honor which still stands today; it says Anthony 'Hinton, Esqr. OS May 7, 1598, aged 66, Grandfather to Mr. Hinton, Privy Councillor to King Charles I'.The manor of 'Earlscote' is strangelybeautiful and peaceful; it is surrounded by its somewhat un-prepossessing farm buildings. It was moated during King Edward VIII's reign when he would spend time there. The ponds still remain on two sides. There are curious (not local) stones in and around the ponds which are said to be of Druidic origin. There are some beautiful brick and timber work on the west side, which is evidently older than the rest of the structure.'The house is mentioned in the book Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott.'There are secret passages running all through the upper part of the house. These secret passages led to many ghost stories. It is, also, said that there were priests who used these passages and hidden rooms to celebrate mass in the days of the Reformation.Anthony carved his own and his wife's initials inside the cupboard door in his bedroom.Today the 'Earlscote' is still standing.Anthony and his wife, Martha, were very generous; almost every church in Wiltshire during their time received beautiful gifts. It appears this branch of the Hinton family secretly still supported the Catholic Church even though King Edward VIII forbad his statesmen to support this Church."
A Doctor Anthony Hinton came to the Virginia Colony, VA in 1612.
From "Hinton and Related Family History".Second Edition, Volume One.Copyright 1971 by the Hinton Family Association."Sir Thomas Hinton of Chilton Foliot, son of Anthony Hinton and Martha Warnford, matriculated to Queen's College, Oxford, June 21, 1591; graduated B.A. 1595.Knighted by King James I at the palace of Oarlands, July 1, 1616, for his valuable service in procuring King James I a loan of L30,000.Sir Thomas was a partner in the third largest brokerage house in all London. He was the largest stockholder in the London Company for settlement in Jamestown, Virginia. He held very many high offices. Was the richest commoner of his time in all England.Sir Thomas was appointed Wool Commissioner during his term of office in the House of Parliament.Thomas came to the Virginia Colony with his brother Sir William in 1634, but returned to England in 1637.Sir Thomas died and was buried first at St. Andrews Church, Wanborough, but was later re-interred at Chilton Foliot at the side of his first wife Catherine."

"In Burkes' General Armory of Great Britain are described the coat of arms of no less than twelve (12) families of Hintons. The name was, sometimes, written Hynton. The arms of the Hintons of 'Earlscott (Earlscote) and 'Chilton Foliot' are 'Per fesse indented argent and sable, six (6) fleur-de-lis-counter-changed.Crest--an eagle's leg erased, entwined by a serpent'.These armorial bearings correspond with those used by the Chowan branch of the family, the founder of which was
John Hinton. This John Hinton, the elder, of Chowan Precinct, was 'A man of prominence, wealth, and widely spread connections' and was traditionally called 'Colonel'.Just how he won this military title is not known.
On April 4, 1722, he was granted (250) two hundred fifty acres of land on Bennets' Creek in Chowan, North Carolina.
He married Mary Hardy, who survived him, and two years after his death, married Thomas Holliday, also of Chowan Precinct, but a member of the family of that name in Nansemond and Isle of Wight Counties, Virginia.
To John and Mary were born four sons and seven daughters, as follows: John, Hardy, William, Malachi, Rachel, Mary, Sarah, Nancy, Charity, Rose, and Judith."When Malachi was quite a youth, being displeased at his mother's second marriage, he left Chowan Precinct and went to live with his older brother, John, and when he became of age, he was granted large tracts of land on the north side of Neuse River about four miles from the present town of Clayton, Johnston County. His first land grant was dated July 22, 1761.He then went back to his old home in Chowan Precinct and brought back his negro slaves and other property. He marriedSarah Wimberly, daughter of George Wimberly, Edgecombe County, North Carolina,June 6, 1764,Malachi was said to be a most upright, straight-forward and fearless man.He was called upon often to give his opinion and judgement on matters of importance. He was noted for his fine sense and sound judgement and in the days when courts were few and far between, he was often called upon to arbitrate differences between his neighbors.
Referring to his good sense and splendid judgement, it brings to mind what a relative has told of Malachi. She said when children in this same Hinton family showed unusual good sense, the other members of the family would say he or she was Malachi born."
William Hinton (brother).Witnesses:James Hinton, Joseph Ashley, Thomas Rountree.Clerk of the Court Rt. (Robert ?) ForsterThis proves John, William, and James were brothers from about 1665 to1732.More research is needed to verify parentage.
Source of information from Hays R. Hinton, Matubba Street, Aberdeen, Mississippi, has John Hinton (born July 10,1603, died October 10, 1682)married to Catrina Vander Ruckle. This could be true because Elizabeth Harrison Hinton (great-great-great-granddaughter of John Hinton and Mary Hardy)married to Jefferson Hugh Johnston named their fourth son (and child) Vander Hinton Johnston.
