1. JOHN¹ WRIGHT was born Abt. 1775 in Frederick Co. Va. or Tennessee, and died Bet. 1860 - 1870. He married MARTHA (PATSY) MCLAUGHLIN January 23, 1810 in Rockbridge, Co. Va.. She was born Abt. 1795 in Rockbridge Co. Va., and died Bet. 1860 - 1870.

Notes for JOHN WRIGHT:
The John Wright family was first found in Russell County records around 1832. A treasury warrant for 45 acres of land on the right hand fork of Russell Creek, a branch of the Clinch River dated December 19,1832 was issued to John Wright on December 22, 1834.This land later became Wise County in 1856 when Wise was formed from Russell Co. By 1856 he owned a total of 402 acres that was assigned to his sons,Parris, Alexander, and William in 1856.The family is known to have lived in the Virginia counties of Rockbridge, Montgomery , and probably Bedford before settling in Russell County. They may have also lived in Tennessee at some time.

John's family was listed in the 1840 Census of Russell County with his sons, John Jr. and Robert and their families and his daughter Virginia and her husband ,Benjamin Jordan, living next door to him.

In the 1850 census of Russell county ,his son,Robert isn't found living near John and his wife but his younger son, Parris has married and has a home next door to him with his wife Polly and five young children. This Parris is listed on the Wise County web page as one of the first settlers of Wise County , Virginia. John's son James has also married and he and his wife Patsy and their two young children now live a few houses away.

When the census of 1860 was taken of Russell County these Wright families are no longer found in Russell Co. because the land they lived on was taken to form Wise County in 1856.
The 1860 census of Wise County shows John Sr. and wife Martha in house # 4 with their two youngest children, William and Nancy living with them. Alexander has married by this time and he and his wife, Susanah, daughter of their neighbor, Thomas Hale, and their children have a home next door to them.

By the time the 1870 census of Wise was taken, John Sr is no longer listed but all the children that lived there previously and many grandchildren are now in the census. The area they lived in has now become Lipps Township, Wise County, Virginia.

In the 1900 and 1910 census this family continues to be in this area. The family has grown and many grandchildren and great grandchildren of John and Martha are still found there.

Neighbors I found were Jordan, Holbrook, Dickenson,Bush, Hays and Hale families .These families intermarried many times . They almost always had large families. Every day life was very difficult for these ancestors. I found many times,looking through records, a family had lost three and four children to diseases all within days or weeks of each other.

Note about age of John Wright:
In the 1850 census of Russell Co. Va. John is 65 and in the 1860 census of Wise Co. he is shown as being 85 years old.

In the 1850 census of Russell Co. it states John was born in Frederick Co. Va. on several other census records including 1860 of Wise Co. Va. it states he was born in Tennessee.
